did UW sour on Maymon strictly because of grades?
« on: May 30, 2008, 08:34:23 AM »
Don't know any of the particulars, but I can't believe our comrades to the west would EVER not consider an athlete due to academics. Was there something else there?

To answer the last question...Yes.

But, it is also true that after the academic issues of Perry and Williams, Bo has decided not to take any borderline students.  Football is another story.  Except for NW or Stanford, I think every school lets anyone who qualifies in.

I've said this before, but part of it was Maymon was in many ways a late bloomer and UW's 2009 class was wrapped up early.  So I think part of it was grades, part of it may have been the dad, but part was just no room.

Lets note that coaches who recruit good kids or kids with good grades do so in as much as they are easier to deal with and less maintenance that bad kids or kids with bad GPAs.  In many respects it's a less work / less hassle situation.

Not too mention Maymon's style of play did not fit in with that killer offensive juggernaut that is the University of Wisconsin Men's Basketball team.

The Mike Deane theory of recruiting.

Jeronne reportedly had some disciplinary during his sophomore year, leading to him being suspended a game or two. I'm not aware of any problems since then.

I don't remember the time line. The incidents were considered serious at the time. Expulsion from Memorial was an option for one or both of the brothers after one incident. The other incident is similar to a well known Mn recruit who was forced to switch schools.

Hopefully this kind of behavior is all behind Maymon.

His high school runs the swing offense...

Imagine if they ran a real offense!

He'd average 40 per game!

The problem with the swing is that it requires such precise performance to be effective.  When Wisconsin runs it well, it is very hard to stop.  When a high school doesn't run it well, it looks like a bunch of players simply standing around not moving.  And believe me, I have seen plenty of the swing offense in Wisconsin HS basketball.  Everybody runs it now that Bo does.

Are you kidding me?  We land a top 100 kid and we need to question why nobody else landed him?  Yes...the glass IS half empty...
