Attendance
Our beloved Marquette was 14th in attendance last year according to the official NCAA report.  Marquette totaled 306,893 fans over 20 home games for an average of 15,345 / game.  Other notables on the list include Syracuse (#2), Louisville (#5), Wisconsin (#7), and Illinois (#10).  The average attendance increased 1,347 / game from the year prior.

Recruiting

• According to Mark Miller at wissports.net, Providence College and new coach Keno Davis have offered a scholarship to Jeronne Maymon.  Maymon was planning on taking an unofficial visit to Marquette yesterday.  No further news at this time as to how the visit went.
  
• AJ Walton is a name that is now popping up on Marquette's recruiting list.  The 6'1" point guard from Little Rock is a top 100 player in 2009.  He also has Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Baylor on his list.  AJ's favorite player in the NBA is Dwyane Wade.  The Arkansas Democrat Gazette, which recently named him their Mr. Basketball, has a nice article about Walton.
  
• A new name on the list for Marquette is Latavious Williams.  Coach Buzz Williams is strongly after the "All-Williams" team, but since Latavious Williams is a five-star, #13 overall ranked power forward in the class of 2009, we guess that helps too.  A K-State blog says that Latavious lists Marquette in his top five.  Chances are probably slim for Marquette, but it's always nice to see us listed as contenders with five-star recruits.

MU still ranked 14th, but averaged over 16,000 per game. Not too shabby for a small, private school.

It's been updated (a couple times) on the website itself and the website reflects accurate information.  However, the updates are not reflected in the post that got auto-populated on Scoop.

I think the attendance figures are outstanding. We are probably the smallest school in the Top 20. It speaks volumes about fan support and certainly something I would mention in the recruiting process.

Interesting to think of the future .. I'd say that next season, attendance will be down just a touch, maybe minus 100-200/game.  I'll guess avg. attendance in 2009-10 will be minus 2k.

Why?  Regarding next season:   Don't you think the curiosity factor will carry the early games, and wins will take care of the conference season?

My basis for a very minor 1% drop is .. from a story I wrote before.  My wife and I have been giant fans, missing only a handful of games over the past decade, while organizing scores of groups to go to games.  Not to mention I spend like 1000 hours working on (cough) a few websites dedicated to MU.

A few weeks ago, she was at the Warrior Shoppe with her dad (an alum) .. she says "I didn't know if I was supposed to buy anything.  Are we still fans?"  -- Of course we are.  But if that went through her head .. it went through more than a few heads.

I believe there is a general reduction in the rabidity of some fans over the events that occurred on April 1st, and the week (and weeks) following.  I think that translates at the box office in an admittedly minor but noticeable way.

Am I going to all the games next season?  You bet.  Will I organize a bunch of groups?  Sure, even more than usual.  Why more?  Savor this season.

I've felt the same way, but as the season approaches I'm certain some of that bad vibe will wear off, and optimism will return.  With every fresh season, "hope springs eternal" and all that happy crap.  This upcoming season we will have the uniqueness of a senior laden team and a new coach.

Assuming that translates into a great season, I don't see a drop off in game day attendance until late the following year, and then for the ticket renewal routine for the 2010-2011 season.

the comment about attendance vs size of university intrigued me.. so I went to the link, took the top 100 in the attendance list, figured out their 2008 undergraduate enrollment numbers (thanks to usnews), figured out what the attendance is compared to the size of the undergraduate student body (percentage wise), and sorted by that.  Here's the result:
