Oakland post game interviews
« on: December 19, 2006, 09:33:02 PM »
Jerel McNeal
- Marquette came out slow early on in the game Mcneal was frustrated with defense.  Crean pulled him to the side and told him he had to get the team going.  Frustrating that they had been practicing well, but came out a bit flat.

- Wanted to make this a running game.  Knew Hopes would be trouble if MU didn't run, or make him pick up some early fouls.  Kangas is a good shooter.

- Likes to play Defense, he gets excited and animated when the have great defensive stands.  Everything starts on defense, which gets him excited because he knows it means the team will be playing well.

- Wanted to get guys going, but credit to the team in picking up on it. David did a great job defending, forcing turnovers, and hit a couple clutch shots.

- Missed dunk in first half because he tried to throw it down one handed - and his hands are too small to palm the ball.  Got up pretty high, doesn't usually feel that energetic, so tried to take advantage of it.  Should have used two hands though.

Tom Crean
- Crean thought it was a pretty good whole game.  Some spots that they didn't execute, but not for lack of trying.  Jerel had 18 deflections, DW had 18 nine times in his career.  The intensity was good.  Oakland had been out rebounding people, so for Marquette to pull down more rebounds than them was good.

- DJ was having some stomach cramps, and isn't feeling well.  Natasha from Richmond (has cerebral palsy) was there tonight and it meant a lot to DJ.  He played a great game, 20, 9 assists, and  6 rebounds was great - hasn't had a better "whole" game.

- David played excellent.  Crean almost didn't want to sub at all because the guys were playing so well together.

- When you get the extra pass - that's how MU has to play - they do well.  They were in the bonus early, and got to the rim instead of settling for jumpers.  It's crucial for MU, and they'll get better if they can keep building on tonight.

- McNeal has been "at another level" in practice.  Stats in practice - it's amazing what all three of the sophomores are doing.  10 assists at halftime, 19 in the game.  Played better in second half - less points allowed off turnovers, and lots of defensive intensity.

- David inspires players with his energy.  When he comes into the game, he can give the team a jolt of energy.  That's what MU needs from their bench.  Trend may be next to do this, Lazar is coming soon too he feels.

Back from the game .. Sure wish we could have dominated these guys for 40 minutes.  One can assume that if we'd played the 2nd half as we did the 1st, Crean wouldn't have been very upbeat.

Oakland LED the game for the first 15 minutes, and had a NINE point lead on us .. At 5 minutes into the 2nd half, it was still a 1 point game.   It wasn't like there was any doubt .. I took my brother in law, and, even while down 9, told him we would beat them by 15, which was pretty close.

We just can't keep letting teams dominate us in the first 10-15 minutes of the game, especially at home.   We need every home win in the BE .. coming out flat for 10-15 minutes each game will make us lose half of them.

It was odd, too, to look at the FG% for the 1st half .. we were shooting a blistering percentage.  Hard to even say we were flat .. Oakland was hit 5 nice 3s in the 1st half alone, that was sure to keep them in the game.

Obviously the goal for the last two OOC games is: DOMINATE FOR 40 MINUTES.
