Draft boards not high on McNeal

Written by: Emmett Prosser

I'll be quite surprised if Jerel McNeal doesn't return to Marquette for his senior year.

Neither NBADraft.net or ESPN.com project him to be a first or second round pick next season. He'll really have to impress NBA scouts and general managers at the summer workouts elevate his draft status. McNeal is currently ranked 73rd of 100 players on ESPN.com's big board.

Second round picks don't receive much guaranteed money, so even if McNeal was selected late in the draft, you have to figure he'd be better off returning to the Golden Eagles for the 2008-09 season.

and this is a surprise?  Jerel is very good but there are some great players working out right now.  It will be good to have him back in the blue & gold next year!

I'd be shocked if Jerel ever truly intended on remaining in the draft. Given that it's essentially free advice from NBA scouts, he'd be silly not to declare right now.... I still think this is a silly rule, now that people are simply using it to gauge their abilities (I'm blaming the rule, not the players such as Jerel or DJ last year who take advantage of it. It's there, so why not use it?)

If I were an NBA scout, I'd start to think maybe my time is being wasted on these camps now, since it's as loaded with folks trying to gauge their status before going back to school as it is with actualy players to be scouted for THIS draft.

Tubby Smith recommended 2 of his underclassmen declare this year (or maybe last year) at Minnesota so that they could get a little more preseason attention so yes, in that respect I think the rule is getting abused a little...

although, it sure beats making dozens of trips to see guys who might be marginal players anyway......get it all done at once.
