"Marquette University Athletics announced today the launch of Marquette Rewards, a new fan engagement and loyalty program created in partnership with Uptop, a Rain company."

So what is "Rain?"

"Through a single API, Rain helps companies launch stablecoin-powered cards, manage digital dollar accounts, and move money across borders on modern settlement rails."

A crypto company?

To be honest, it is very unbecoming.  Though I do see that they're partnered with other sports teams, professional and collegiate.

Will there be hot dogs for sale at the MSU game?

That's all the reward we need!

Speaking of Brew.  Missed his opponent previews this year.  Always did a great job.

I have never owned crypto, but an honest question, why is it unbecoming?

I own crypto, but stuff like this just feel like it is designed for people with poor urge control.  Strikes me as the predatory micro transactions that are everywhere, or the 'gambling' on cards or toys.  Fuels addiction.

Maybe I'm wrong and it is innocuous, but you know... money.

MUbiz

This is a big NO from me. Its just more data mining of your personal life disguised as a loyalty program.

Uptop's core proposition to sports teams and corporate sponsors is proving "partner ROI". They track when you buy specific items (e.g., a beverage at a grocery store, a beer at a local bar, or gear online) to reward you.

To make that work, their platform collects and analyzes detailed, real-time purchasing behavior across off-campus retailers, bars, and online stores. You are exchanging granular itemized spending habits for team perks.

The_Ghost_of_Wojo

I really struggle to see how increased data tracking and micro-targeted ads are going to provide a material benefit to the university or to the fans. But I could just be dumb...

I'll never believe the trope that BE teams are better off than P4 teams bc we don't have to share with football. Teams with football, 9 times out of 10, have 10x more fans than we do.  Therefore...we are going to have to turn over every little rock and cryptocoin to make a buck.  It sucks but that is the reality.

I work in info security in the financial services area and probably understand this topic better than most. So here is my take:

Monetizing the "Anonymous" Fan: Historically, a fan buys a ticket, goes to Fiserv Forum or an on-campus venue, buys a hot dog, and leaves. The university knows that a ticket was sold, but they don't know who bought a beer at halftime, where they ate before the game, or what brands they like. Card-linked offers and receipt-scanning bridge that gap.

Sponsorship Value: Athletic departments don't just sell stadium signage anymore; they sell data and targeted reach. If Marquette can prove to local partners (restaurants, bars, retail shops) that "fans who attend men's basketball games spend $X at your business because of our app," Marquette can charge those sponsors a lot more money.

New Revenue Streams: In the NIL and modern collegiate sports era, athletic departments are scrambling for alternative revenue. Platforms leveraging blockchain/stablecoin rails (like Uptop's parent company, Rain) are often sold to universities as a way to "future-proof" ticket sales, merchandise, and digital collectibles into new revenue pipelines.

The big football schools are doing the same too. Is what it is.

Every major sports league — from the NFL down — is running this playbook now. I've actually worked on the security side of these platforms, and at the end of the day, it's just a trade-off. They put out the bait, but you're in total control of whether you want to become a source of data or keep your privacy.

BINGO!

The system measures the value of sponsorships. How many people who see your sponsorship of MU Basketball buy your product? This isn't foolproof, but it's a quantitative measure of what to now has been more qualitative beliefs.

It ain't your grandpa's athletic department anymore. The revenue model shifted from selling physical tickets to selling customer data, targeted spend, and next-gen tech rails. Welcome to 2026.

This is all very informative. Thank you!

It does open the question of what is the line we as fans want to draw, because this effectively converts fandom into a product to sell.Going to Fiserv and hitting the bar, the financial data all of that generates, won't that ultimately get leveraged against us to increase our spend?

I'm not naïve and i know this isn't necessarily unique. And in the modern world of college sports the fight to increase revenues matters.

But I don't enjoy the "commercialization of belonging" that's at play here. And maybe I'm oversensitive. It's not like spending the amount of money i do on Marquette sports was some kind of sacred transaction to begin with. Maybe some things just suck if you look at them to hard

Honestly, spot on. That line between engagement and total extraction gets thinner every day, and treating fan passion like a spreadsheet dataset definitely strips away some of the magic.

Where the line gets drawn comes down to choice vs. coercion. Fans will tolerate commercialization if it's strictly opt-in with a tangible value exchange—like earning perks on an app. But when tracking becomes aggressive or mandatory just to participate in game day, people start pushing back. Programs need to realize that turning your core culture into a harvesting field eventually burns out the very loyalty paying the bills.
