Blanton Simmons

Saw a post on the McGuire Facebook page on Blanton Simmons. Didn't know about him. Had success a dozen years before I attended a game and five years before I was born. Saw showed a lot of promise early in his career, then fell off a good amount. Can anybody share the reasons why? Thanks.

I remember Blanton. He had a great smile. He was a tall guard, 6'5", who would often do a cross dribble in front of an opponent before shooting or driving in. He was a likeable guy. A positive representative of Marquette.

Played against him in High School in state when he was at North. We had never seen a 6'5" Guard in High School that could shoot like him. Our tallest player was about 6'3". We were crushed by about 30 points.

I think what Rico was referring to was copying a Candid Camera gag from years ago where an actor sat next to an old guy in a coffee shop, ordered a donut, and then after taking a bite out of it dunked it into the guy's coffee.

Was in a couple of classes with Blanton in our frosh season of 64-65. He was a talented player but academics unfortunately were not his long suit. His career was spotty because of that and finally was ineligible for his senior season. Think he had a nagging injury after his frosh season as well. Though he did end up graduating. Think he passed away a couple years ago?

Seems like a good person we don't hear much about. Died in 2024. RIP.
