There will be lawsuits on the lawsuits. And then lawsuits on those lawsuits. By the time there's an actual ruling, Ben might be Social Security eligible. (Or whatever Australia's New Zealand's version of Social Security is.)

I'm not sure this ruling holds up.  If it does,  it could radically change how next year looks. Someone get Ben on the phone!

For right now it only affects those players who were a part of the class action, three of whom were Xavier and Cincy players. In a totally unrelated coincidence, the judge who ruled in favor is a Xavier and Cincy Law grad, and his wife is the Dean of the Cincy law school.

For the time being, it seems several more players have been granted eligibility to return and play a fifth year.

Among the list of names: AJ Storr 💀

This was always obvious:

Quote from: brewcity77 on April 26, 2026, 04:23:36 PMThe reason the portal has slowed to a crawl is because this is coming, everyone knows it's coming, and it's going to be in effect by next year. Four-year 2026 seniors that choose to return will be able to do so in 2026-27. That is definitely the most likely outcome and safest assumption to make.

We'll see if it stands up but I wouldn't trust NCAA lawyers to overturn this

So if a school has already filled all 15 scholarship spots they can still add any returning 2022 athlete without affecting the scholarship cap? Also this means we could have Fru for another year?

Doubtful on point one.  Unsure on point two.

Nothing published says anything about going beyond the scholarship limit.

Fru is irrelevant to this decision. I believe Fru already has 2 years with us but the NCAA hasn't publicly clarified when the cutoff is for how it's counting academoc years.

Even if Fru will be eligible to play college ball in 2027-28, there's no guarantee it will be at Marquette. He'll get paid large - maybe by MU, maybe by some other school.

We agree. Given the incredible player turnover in college hoops, Shaka has done extraordinarily well at getting the players he wanted to keep to stay at Marquette. I like to think he'll be able to do the same with Fru should the opportunity present itself because Fru - like Nigel, Parham, Kam, etc - will so value his relationship with MU players and coaches. It's not 15 scholarships; it's 15 roster spots.

Unless someone on the team is a DSA, MU is at their roster cap, and the judge in Colorado said those are still in effect.

Not trying to nit-pick, but we show 14 for this coming season. Brenn's name showed up in the Canadian games, but I don't know about him. Was he given the 15th scollie?

Brenn is on the roster at gomarquette.com. My guess is Crowdis and him aren't on scholarship.

Again, the limit isn't 15 scholarships; it's 15 players (unless any are DSAs, in which case they don't count against the limit).

15 rostered player max, with certain exceptions for grandfathered walk-ons. That's it.

Scholarships are a different conversation and do not affect the 15 player max.

No chance Crowdis is paying his own tuition this year.

My guess is that he is getting an academic scholarship, and perhaps a partial athletic one as well.

Interesting scenario...
Aug 3: Hardwood Houdini on 2nd rd pick from StJ's Dillon Mitchell...

"if Mitchell is not pleased with the contract or situation in Boston, he can go back to school. Whether that is St. John's welcoming him back or another team giving him an NIL payday to play for them, he has options. What do the Celtics want from the situation? They will retain Mitchell's rights if he returns to school, so it would function as something of a "draft-and-stash" if he returns to college, just as international players have been "stashed" for years.

Could Boston try to get Mitchell to choose a school in the Northeast so they can keep close tabs on him? Is there a college coach running a similar system to Joe Mazzulla they can direct him toward? Can Mitchell get paid, not hit the Celtics' books, develop for another year and then join the team?

There are strong benefits to having Mitchell in their own system, but they cannot offer him the kind of money he could make in college. And leaving that roster spot open gives them options to add a veteran player, and delays The Celtics and Mitchell now have options. Sorting through them to predict what both sides will decide is a difficult proposition. As of Friday, however, the world has opened up for Dillon Mitchell."

Walk-ons aren't the only ones "grandfathered" in.

An individual could be labeled a "DSA" (and not count against the limit) if they were or were going to be on the team in 2025-26 but, due to the roster limits, would be cut. So, an incoming kid who had signed a financial aid agreement could be a DSA. They do not count against the roster limit for the duration of their college career regardless of where they play.

Most schools followed the rules that only those who would have been cut were given the DSA label, while some (TCU, for example) gave entire rosters the DSA label.

This article is incorrect. It was clarified that players affected by the class-wide injunction will not be eligible to transfer schools unless they submitted their name during the initial portal window.

So for the majority of players who were granted a fifth season, like Mitchell, their only option currently is to return to their previous team.

There have been rulings in other suits that allow players to enter the portal. I don't believe Mitchell is covered by those rulings however.
