MU students will never know the joy of walking through a cloud of secondhand smoke to enter McCormick Hall.

Quote from: MU82 on June 23, 2026, 11:25:32 AMI was a HS junior in Connecticut in 1976-77, and Marquette was not yet on my radar as a possible destination. Pretty much everything I knew about the school, the Warriors and Al McGuire came from the few games a season that were on national TV and the occasional Sports Illustrated mentions. I learned a lot more during the NCAA Tournament.

MU was the defending national champion when I decided to go there, and "we" were expected to make another Final Four run in 1978. I proudly wore my Marquette t-shirt and hat to school the day before the NCAAT started. Then the Warriors promptly lost to Miami of Ohio, and my buddies trash-talked me for weeks ... as if I had anything to do with the loss. Thanks a lot, Jerome Whitehead!

Anyhoo, I'm looking forward to seeing the various celebrations of and tributes to the 1976-77 Warriors. That must have been an incredible time to have been a Marquette student.

It wasn't Whitehead it was the idiot referee.

You could still buy cigarettes at McCormick Hall from a cigarette machine in 1988-1989.

no disrespect to Maurice Acker, but that's a FF team if Dominator Dominic James doesn't break his foot.

Pretty sure we've done this more than once, so cut that team some slack, OK?.

Maybe Fieldhouse will show up here and provide the details in tricolor.

Definitely a second weekend team. We were #8/#10 when DJ got hurt. 23-4, 12-2 in the BE. Not sure if we were Final Four caliber. UConn, Nova, MSU, and UNC were the final four teams that year.

DJ broke his foot during the UConn game, which started our four game losing streak, against #2, #6, #3, and #25. Then we lost in the BET to #10 Villanova.

Honestly, I felt we would have beaten Mizzou had DJ not played in that game. Waiting for us would have been #3 Memphis then UConn.

So what?  The 2003 team lost to Dayton and East Carolina.

And almost lost to Holy Cross and we wouldn't remember them at all. My point is they had some obvious issues even at their peak so locking them in as a FF team is a stretch. It was hardly Purdue or 2024 UConn where it was glaringly obvious they were untouchable and making the FF
