Quote from: The Sultan on Today at 01:02:05 PMI'm getting a chuckle that you don't understand how the situations were completely different. Just compare Hamilton's and Williams' sophomore year stats and you can see how.

So when people were saying "we're really arguing over 90 seconds" when saying Hamilton is in line for 10 mpg and others pointed out he played 8.5 mpg over the last 19 games of the season, and now 90 seconds less than that (what EW averaged his sophomore year, while starting 11 games) is wildly different that Caedin?

Shaka overestimated what Caedin could be last year.  He had him in the starting lineup when he never should have been.  He realized that and, despite the fact that we only had Ben Gold, Royce Parham, and Josh Clark to compete for minutes with, Caedin only 8.5 mpg over the last 19 games.  That includes two games where one of Ben/Royce was out with injury.

The counterpoint to that is "Well he played in the first half!"  Yet EW is a bad counterpoint as a starter because he played...what was deemed as an immaterial amount of time less than what CH did over the last 19 games of the year?

Okay, I guess!

The reality is, Shaka went into the offseason and targeted a starting 5 and had Sheek signed up to return.  I know JayBee is just doing schtick to get the rise out of people with anxiety over this that we're seeing, but Shaka didn't go into this offseason thinking, "Hey, we're in a great spot with Caedin."  It's very clear he knew we needed an upgrade there.  And the good news?  He got one!  One that is much better than Ben Gold was, and Royce will be a year older and hopefully stronger going into next season.

Of course it'd be nice to have another backup big.  Someone like, say, Sheek Pearson on the roster.  Like I've said, we can't bemoan Shaka for not playing the portal game, and then get mad when the portal game bites us once we jump into it.

Back up centers no matta. Or so seems to be the new narrative.

Not nearly as much as a number of posters on here are making them out to matta.

You've become a caricature of a caricature at this point.

Except no one is saying that. Not getting a Sheek replacement is the issue.

Are we now saying Shaka dipping into the portal for Fru is the reason Sheek left?

wadesworld

Quote from: Pakuni on Today at 03:32:36 PMAre we now saying Shaka dipping into the portal for Fru is the reason Sheek left?

No.  I'm saying that unlike just about every high major program, Shaka had been able to keep every player he wanted to from season to season, but he also hadn't dipped into the portal since his first season.  We were never going to start getting into the portal AND retain every player we wanted to keep.  That's just not reasonable whatsoever.

If Mr. Pearson had stayed the board would froth over the lack of a third-string center.
When we stop talking, really bad stuff happens.

It is unreasonable to expect reasonableness on Scoop.

And if Fru decided to leave halfway through the summer, the board would say it's not a big problem.

Boy, this game sure is dumb and waste of time!

Quote from: GoldenEagles03 on Today at 12:00:53 PMWhat don't you agree with? Marquette is routinely near the top of college hoops in attendance. They spend a lot of money. This is a great basketball program. We should expect to win in Milwaukee against everyone and anyone.

Everyone will lose games at home, no big deal, but I still think we should expect to win. Have some pride in the program!

FWIW - Marquette won 81 straight homes games between 1967 and 1973 - MU Pride

This is one of the funniest things I've ever read on scoop. Not because I think you're stupid or some random crap like that.

This just sounds like something Ricky Bobby would say.

Yes. Obviously.

Williams reached double digit minutes four times that year. Three against buy opponents. One a blow out win v. Providence. He didn't log a single minute for over a month from late January to late February.

Hamilton played in every game and racked up double digit minutes in ten Big East games, but also the five other P5 games they had on their schedule.

It's really a poor comparison.

EDIT: Also, Buzz basically said that the only reason Williams started those games was to prevent Jae from picking up an early foul. Hamilton was touted as a potential surprise. Their roles were expected to be completely different.

UConn is a better program and has been since Hurley has been there. The idea that Marquette should be favored at home v. UConn sounds good, but just isn't reality.

Correct.  And then Shaka saw how the season was playing out with Caedin in the role he expected for him and adjusted that role.  Once that happened, Caedin only really played when foul trouble or injuries occurred to one of our two capable front court players.

BUT HE PLAYED IN THE FIRST HALF!

Is starting not playing in the first half?  So do first half minutes, even limited, send a season off the rails, or do first half minutes not matter?

Well, like a lot of things on Scoop, it changes depending on the narrative you're pushing, apparently.
