Danny Hurley is railing against coaches who are taking advantage of the recent court ruling that allows fifth-year athletes to keep playing college ball.

"We can't go on the way we're going on like this," Hurley told reporters Friday. "It's the (college) players, but then you also have kids in high school who get affected by this, so there are people who end up losing. You can't act like it's a victimless situation. There are kids who are 17, 18 years old who potentially may lose out on opportunities, so it's not victimless."

"You can put together better teams, compete and not have to identify young talent, develop that talent (and) have a vision of putting together a team over time to develop," Hurley said. "Now you can screw up high school recruiting, (transfer) portal recruiting, not have a very good team and now start plucking from a group of players in August and put together a team."

Hurley said he won't add any players to his roster but called the situation "frustrating."

"If compliance says something is illegal and we can't do it, or a player is ineligible based on the rules, our reaction as a university isn't, 'Let's go find a lawyer in Willimantic, Connecticut.'"

I think everyone understands his frustration. There needs to be a CBA so that the rules are known and agreed upon by everyone.

The college presidents are the core cause of all this. I wonder if some/most/all just don't think sports are all that important. I think most get the fact that sports are not really core to the institutions' missions, but with the dollars involved, you would think it would move up the importance ladder.

I think it was more of a matter of them believing that they could dictate-via the NCAA-all the terms and conditions to college athletes. And they WERE able to. Until they couldn't any longer. There was no Plan B.

No. They care. College presidents know athletics is important. But hardly of them have experience with overseeing athletics. And as I said, they are generally resistant to change.

IMO, they are a smart group of people and they may care but not as much as they should. Or maybe I should say, they don't care as much as sports fans wish they would. I suppose they may have their priorities in better perspective, but its frustrating.

Anyways, the past is the past. Time to organize the players and sign a CBA or the litigation will go on forever.
