Quote from: nyg on March 03, 2026, 03:07:48 PMThis is why recruiting, with the exception of Top 50 recruits, is a crap shoot.  It is really up to the coach and staff to ascertain the potential they observe in the recruiting process.

For example, take the case of Illinois's Keaton Wagler.  He was rated #150 in the 2025 class, which included Phillips at #108 and Militec at #112.  Wagler is now being mocked as a lottery pick in the 2026 draft.  Illinois staff saw something and it paid off.

Shaka has had his misses with Amadou, Norman, Hamilton, Clark and even Lowery. Phillips has nice form on his three shot, his only attribute, but shoots like 35% from the free throw line??? Owens was the big get and he in a stall mode in development. So, lots of non development or bad observation of potential when recruiting. He has hit with James and potential for Parham and Stevens as they gain experience.  I am sure no one here has seen Militec, Nash or Pearson play, so no one knows how they will play out in the future. Maybe one of them can do half of what Wagler has done for Illinois and surprise for next season.
If the can shoot.

Honest question, but when was the last time a non-injury redshirted player turned out to have much of an impact for MU? Sacar?

Biggie Clausen

If Phillips redshirts next year, he'll really be able to focus on his bench celebrations where he acts like we just won the national championship after one of our players hits a three to pull us within 10 against an unranked team home.  This is already a huge strength of his, but I imagine it must be distracting when he has to think about the possibility of coming into the game, so it'll be nice that he can just focus on this area.

Really super clever stuff here.  Impressive.

Uh...OK.

Quote from: The Sultan on Today at 08:18:27 AMOf course he can have an opinion. I can have one as well - projecting such success by a freshman based on watching a couple of high school games has been done here over and over and over again, and usually ends up being wildly inaccurate. I mean we have posters giving wildly inaccurate projections here based on how they have played in a couple buy games.

And yes, you are correct, I haven't watched him play at all. Which is why I am not giving any opinions about how he will play next year. I will wait until I actually see him play.
You may not be incorrect in what you say, but I think this $#!t-show of a season has made you a little testy. It was a fan being positive about one of our guys based upon seeing him in person. Nothing more.

Now if he asserted that Shaka should skip the portal because IM is soooo good, then I'd take exception to that.

Probably.  But definitely Sheek and even Ian are a different caliber of red shirt than what most players that have redshirted at Marquette are.
