It'd be pretty hard to keep a small number like that under wraps. Russia lying about casualties in ukraine? Absolutely, the numbers are enormous and would take considerable effort to verify.

If the US actually had 300 dead, but announced 17. They could hold that lie for what, a couple of months? Eventually people would start asking why they haven't heard from Johnny or Mike for the last four months. Then when their deployment ends, what happens? It's not like were holding 300 funerals with military rights for soldiers aged 20-40 on a frequent basis. That's what would happen if the administration is truly lying about the numbers.
