I watched a few episodes of Rise of the Nazis on PBS. Amazing how many similarities there were between Adolph Hitler and the man that Vance once called "America's Hitler."

For one thing, Adolph surrounded himself with people who constantly told him how brilliant and perfect he was.

Also, no matter what Adolph said or did, and no matter how many lies Adolph told, his propagandists and sycophants made sure the public knew their leader was all-knowing and moral and truthful.

Admiral's Comments Undercut Pentagon's Cluster Munition Policy

In a video posted on social media on Monday, Adm. Brad Cooper, the leader of U.S. Central Command, condemned a recent Iranian cluster munition attack on Israel.

Calling them "an inherently indiscriminate type of munition," Admiral Cooper said the "Iranian regime" had launched "a reckless attack against civilian neighborhoods in Tel Aviv." A video showed dots of light streaking through the night sky from an incoming missile.

"We join countries across the region in condemning this aggression," he added.

The first Trump administration, however, defended the use of cluster munitions in a policy that remains in effect today.

Cluster munitions are a class of military ordnance that breaks apart in midair and scatters smaller explosive or incendiary weapons, often called bomblets, over a large area. About 20 percent of those bomblets fail to explode on impact but can still explode if discovered even decades later.

In November 2017, Patrick M. Shanahan, who was serving as the deputy secretary of defense at the time, signed a memo calling cluster munitions "legitimate weapons with clear military utility."

His memo reversed an earlier Pentagon decision to ban the use of its existing arsenal of cluster weapons by 2019 because of the harm they pose to civilians.

Last week as Iran laid mines in the Persian Gulf, four of the U.S. Navy's few specialist minesweepers were on the move—to Philadelphia and their eventual decommissioning.

The Navy hasn't had a significant mine clearing capability in decades, former naval officers and analysts said. Now it faces having to deal with the risk of mines in one of the world's most important waterways while the West's thinking on how to deal with the seaborne threat is in flux.

Defense companies and navies, including in the U.S., are experimenting with unmanned technology and artificial intelligence that they believe will provide safer and more effective ways of clearing mines before they can do any damage. But while promising, limited amounts of that technology have been produced and it is largely untested in conflict.

"The U.S. Navy has neglected minesweeping, and our limited number of hulls will make it difficult to credibly escort oil tankers in a contested environment," said Eliot Cohen, a scholar at the Center for Strategic and International Studies think tank.
