My favorite Huggy Bear moment was when he got his 2nd T in a game, headed into the tunnel, then came back out and started shouting, fuming, and letting the crowd and refs know he was really, really pissed. Then he went back into the tunnel and did not come out again. If he had, it would have been exciting to see the cops trying to cuff him.

If he's honest, he has a shrink listed on his health insurance card as his Primary Care Physician.

I mean, that's been in process for years.  He's a pretty complicated character, not even speaking to his basketball accumen.

I think he's far less of an pretty boy than we all thought him to be in his Cincy heydey in the mid 90s, but he's also been a longtime (maybe still is, not sure) raging problematic alcoholic.  I have zero sympathy for DUI/drunk driving, much less repeated offenses.  But Ive also seen first hand how brutal and insidious alcoholism can be.

He was/is a far more friendly/kind/generous person off the court than you'd think from the aforementioned reputation/actions, but the Xavier comments and slurs were indefensible and cheapen the mentioned positives.

I hated him as a kid and teen when he was at Cincy.  Had an unexpected and shockingly great run-in interaction with him in Morgantown early in his WVU (not shockingly at a bar mid-afternoon). Then I further gained some different perspective on him from my friend's brother who worked in the athletics department at WVU and raved about how Huggins had time for everyone, was loved by his players and well liked by staffers, etc...

You don't have to endorse or excuse anything he's done to acknowledge what an entertaining and big figure he was in CBB the last 30+ years.

Complicated dude. I hated him for awhile, and like Wags said the DUI stuff and the slurs are truly unacceptable and degenerate behavior. But I did start seeing him in a different light after the Da'Sean Butler injury

My cousin lived in Morgantown while her husband pursued a doctorate as Gym Teacher (something like that) and Huggy was the coach.  The faculty loved him and apparently he always showed up for faculty meetings and other campus events that none of the other coaches showed up.

I'm pretty cynical, but considering plenty have really good stories about him, I think it's more likely he's a really caring dude for those in his life and has some major, major flaws

I think going back "home" to WVU/Morgantown fundamentally changed and softened him, off the court at least.  No it didn't fix or alleviate his terrible drinking problem, but like we've said, a complicated and flawed individual can still have many good qualities.

It reminded me a bit of the father of a friend of mine.  Very accomplished cardiologist, good dad, really charitable and philanthropic in his community.  But he had a shockingly well hid and secret alcoholic streak for 2 decades.  Part of his philanthropic work also led to a really good relationship with the police in the semi-rural community, where my friend grew up on a big hobby farm, who helped cover up/look the other way on a few DUIs.  It all came to light when he wrapped his car around a lamp pole at 6:30 one night and it couldn't be hidden anymore.

So yea, alcoholics are complicated.  Some are complete unrepentant POS's (like my grandfather actually!) and some are otherwise very kind/loving/caring people who have a really insidious condition that can lead to really bad stuff that runs directly counter to their better selves.

Lets put it this way, Bobby Knight was an absolute basketball savant and hilarious in a reckless, unfiltered sort of way with the press or as a commentator.  But he was also pretty widely accepted as a dickhead.  I don't think the same is true for Huggins
