Also in honor of Pope Leo,  I have no enemies.  I have brothers and sisters I sometimes disagree with.

But no, coaches are not supposed to hype players. Coaches are supposed to protect players. Setting unrealistic expectations for a player only serves to increase the scrutiny and criticism of the player if he underperforms. It's setting up  a kid for failure.
The lasting memory of Caedin Hamilton's time at Marquette likely won't be anything he did on the court, it will be 10,000 hook shots and "well-embedded moles." And that's on Shaka.

I'm guessing 90+% of Marquette basketball fans have no clue what "well embedded moles" referred to, what those moles said, or that Caiden made 10K hook shots. On Scoop maybe that's what he'll be remembered for but to the vast majority of MU fans, no.

It's fine to acknowledge hard work and sing their praises in a controlled public manner.

Going back and re-reading the October article on RGV and Hamilton's so-called explosive growth borders on comedic. It's almost hard to believe part of his ritual was just yelling out that he's the biggest baddest motherf#%ker and taking a bunch of hook shots (has even attempted a hook shot this season?).

Right. The other 90% of Marquette fans will view him as a pretty bad player. So much better.

He has tried many hook shots this season.  Often instead of a simpler shot.

Well at least he tried.

Sure. But nobody will really think about him much after he leaves. How often do you think about Erik Williams or Patrick Hazel?

Rarely. But what is your point exactly? That will be as forgettable as Erik Williams and Patrick Hazel?

Yes. That people are overreacting to how "harmful" Shaka has been to Caedin by talking him up to "well embedded moles."

Setting unrealistic expectations of a player isn't helpful at all. Again, this is a strange hill to die on.

Not dying on a hill. Just not overreacting to something that hasn't changed anything about the player or this team.

So just dismiss Shaka's comments on players going forward?

I'd just take everything with a grain of salt, especially if it's Rothstein posting about his well-embedded moles.

Juan Anderson's Mixtape

I remember Shaka, before the season, saying how Nigel and Adrien were going to play a lot this year.

Nevada Smith was also hyping Nigel in preseason.

Were those instances ok?  Or was it a warning sign that our returners weren't improving as much as hoped?

Harmful seems subjective here, but he did Caedin no favors by creating lofty expectations that he couldn't meet.
As PT said, Shaka and staff made Caedin the face of this year's failures. That seems unfair to Caedin, as he's just one of several players who've underperformed ... and he's probably underperformed less than others relative to talent.
Is that harmful? YMMV
