Was on a cruise to Turks and Caicos most of this past week and spending a few days around Miami now.

I am loathing returning to the Midwest.

Eh kept the toddler home from day care, hasn't been too terrible because the wind wasn't as bad as expected I think.

How is everybody coping?

Just set aside a couple of 5 gallon buckets of water for flushing because living in the country means well water which means when the power goes out, the water goes out. We have a gas stove (I know, I know-you don't like them and have seen what happens when gas leaks) that can be lit with a match, so we can cook while we shiver if the power is out for a while.

With thousands of acres of trees around here, the freezing rain will certainly result in power lines down. My guess is no more than 24 hours without power. Our electric co-op is top notch on getting power restored quickly, but they will almost certainly be swamped with outages. The good news? The freezing rain will be on Sunday, so I will see the bball games I want to. I may miss the NFL games though.

I had a ticket to tonight's game.  There has been so much snow in the last week around here that highway speeds are all down around 40.  That would have made it 3.5 hours to the Indiana border, 6 hours overall.  So, no.

Let's talk again when hurricane season is back. A week of crappy weather beats Hell out of having your house destroyed by 100+ mph winds.

I had a ticket to tonight's game.  There has been so much snow in the last week around here that highway speeds are all down around 40.  That would have made it 3.5 hours to the Indiana border, 6 hours overall.  So, no.

It's 2 in Indy, real feel of -12. And MU's three point shooting was even colder than that.

The freezing rain is resulting in downed trees and power outages in many areas in the path of the storm as expected. We have freezing rain in the forecast all day, so I am expecting our power to be off sometime this afternoon. Then, even when they have it back up, it may go down a couple more times. Unlike power restoration after a major summer thunderstorm, with the event being over, trees will likely continue to fall for a day or two and create more outages.

There was one "good news" item in the online weather report though. The pollen level is zero!

Car held up well on Friday. Left the house around 6:15am when it was -22 to drive to the PPA tournament. I didn't get out of there until noon... car started right up, praise the Lord. Per PPA staff, there were ZERO cancellations by players - cold weather no matta in MN.

Here in Central Jersey I have about 10 inches of snow and still coming down heavily. Suppose to switch to snow/sleet/freezing rain later this afternoon. Most snow we have had the last 2-3 years.

Car held up well on Friday. Left the house around 6:15am when it was -22 to drive to the PPA tournament. I didn't get out of there until noon... car started right up, praise the Lord. Per PPA staff, there were ZERO cancellations by players - cold weather no matta in MN.

My first car was a 1959 Mercedes 190 diesel, which I bought my senior year at MU. In one winter cold snap in the Chicago burbs, the temperature fell well below zero. It was aroung Christmas and none of family members' cars would start, but....mine did!

Was supposed drive from Columbia to St. Louis for the Blues game yesterday with a group of 9, 2 from STL, 6 from Columbia, and one driving from Duluth to Denver, staying with us in Columbia after the game. Even up to Friday morning it looked like we could get there with no problem, but the drive home might be slow and not fun, and my wife had to work this morning so there was no staying in St. Louis.

By Friday night the snow totals in Columbia and St. Louis had grown enough that we were pretty sure we wouldn't go but were going to make the final call Saturday morning. The brother from Duluth called off his drive and went southwest, stopping in Omaha instead and avoiding snow. Woke up and it was already snowing, so confirmed we'd stay in Columbia. Sent all 9 tickets to the 2 from STL, and they got a group that thought they'd go. Their snow also came earlier and heavier, so even they didn't make the game.

Did our grocery shopping yesterday morning and on the drive home I'm pretty sure the difference in temperature between the outside and inside of the car caused my windshield to crack. Big U shaped crack around almost the entire windshield. Was not driving under any trees, so now large amount of snow or ice fell on it. No other cars around. Didn't see anything fly or fall onto it. That happened to a bedroom window at our house last winter. Sounded like somebody threw a brick through our window as the sun was rising, so we were still sleeping. Definitely startling. Couldn't find it, and it was the small window right above our bed.
