Like they did for Kam.

As I understand it, paying to keep and rewarding loyalty is part of the philosophy.

How's that gonna line up with Shaka's insistence that the guys who have been in the program the longest make the most money?

Hey Tre.

Glad you stuck it out this long to get your Senior payday, but uhhh we actually have some news for you.

Quote from: Mu8891 on January 10, 2026, 04:53:40 PMBM - Tre ( and Sean and Hamilton ) need to go.  Shaka needs 3 or 4 new players,
and probably 2 starters to make a real
team next year.  They have too much dead weight...

If two of those three guys leave, it'll be fine. If all three stay...yeah I agree.

Does Marquette have any big $ boosters that provide NIL funds? Is Marcus Lemonis a basketball fan? I know he gave $15 million to the school. Was any of that for basketball NIL?

No.
Yes.
I don't think so.  But open to learning differently.

I asked this before.  We need to snag some of his coin for our NIL.  :)

Marquette will need its money to retain Nigel and Royce, both will make close to 1M or over next season.

After that, Adrien will get slightly above what a regular soph gets and the rest is to be divvied up to the young guys and two impact transfers.

No inside knowledge on this but I would be very surprised if Shaka doesn't bring in 2 guys bare minimum, but 3-4 more likely.
Only 2 of those will be money affecting guys imo.

Hopefully the 2 guys that get the loot help Nigel and Royce field an NCAA tourney team or else this play will have Shaka's head on a platter

I do think there's 5% chance or less that Shaka doesn't bring in 2 impact guys. Won't be happy if he doesnt

I think Nigel could make significantly more than that elsewhere. Not sure about Royce.

With all due respect, you are an insane person to suggest Royce parham will command a big time NIL bag on the open market.

Don_Kojis

Love Nigel's offensive.  But he let his guy get a lot of layups today.  I admit he made some steals.  He has to stop his guy.
We have nothing in the middle.  Gold was 1-22 in 3 pt shots in conference.  He has to improve.  I would hope Shaka has someone working with him
I would hope Parham could be a little more aware of def players around him.  He got the ball stolen at least 3 times.
Chase isn't a leader.  He is a good complementary player with better players around him. We don't have that guard or wing to take the last shot or in a crucial situation.
Why did Shaka have Philips in at the end of the game to shot an air ball.  He is supposed to be a good outside shooter.  But he is a freshmen and didn't have a lot of game experience.
WE had a good chance to win.  They still don't click as a team.

Quote from: Johnny B on January 10, 2026, 04:04:29 PMThey've looked better since he left. What are u talking about he was bad and didn't give a full effort

Today Shaka looked at the bench and basically had to choose between Tre and Phillips.  I like Phillips as a prospect, but if Zaide were on the floor in his or Tre's place down the stretch - we probably win.

I don't think they've looked better since he's left.  I think Royce has rounded into expected form, and Nigel James clearly is getting better every game of his freshman year.

Vander Blue Man Group

While I don't think Doc is insane, I don't see Royce commanding a huge bag on the open market unless he blows up the next two months, which is unlikely.

That being said, he's improving and I think he can be a nice piece for a winning team his final 2 seasons.

PointWarrior

So we are transitioning to "too bad our seniors suck" or else we might have been okay this seasons ?

I really don't understand why Josh doesn't get a bit more run just for rim protection sake. It's hard to be as aggressive as we are on ball when there's no backstop if your guy gets by you. I get we went small a lot today, but a lineup with Royce, Clark, Nigel, Adrien and Chase should definitely get more run than it does IMO.

Yes.  Our rim protection and interior defense is exceedingly horrid.

Quote from: tower912 on January 10, 2026, 03:44:17 PMPhillips had been playing all along.  And, do you want it to be Phillips, Tre, or Damarius in at smallball crunch time?

Phillips hadn't played for a number of minutes and was cold coming off the bench. His 3 attempt wasn't even close.

The team that kept MU in the game interestingly was a group of smaller players who happen to have the best hoops IQs (James, Ross, Parham, Stevens, and Norman), which is not saying much on this team. Norman isn't very good but he has an idea what he's supposed to do.

tower912

MU played small ball.  Royce played a crap ton of small ball 5.  Injuries, illness, opponent also playing small.  Two things about that.
1.  Royce, NJ, Chase, hobbling AS.  Small ball, who do you want as the 5th.  DO, MP, Tre?
2.  Small ball defense, rotation, switching were off.  Recently, the defense has been better.  Today, it wasn't.  Everybody again looked unsure of where and when to be.

Longer term, Phillips. Today, Tre was a lot better defensively. DO has been lost most of the season and is behind both Phillips and Tre in the rotation.

MU was better on both ends today with Hamilton and Clark on the bench. I agree that the defense was brutal.

For the record, I wanted Tre, also.  Simply pointing out what the options were.

Parham has established himself as a solid #2 for the future, IMO.
I see hope for next year. Critical James stays, Stevens, Phillips and Parham too...redshirts contribute, incoming are good, get a solid transfer for Zaide's spot...definitely hope. Turnarounds in basketball can happen quickly. Heck, IU proves it in football.

Agreed.  Not worried about Nigel leaving at all.  Or any of the other young guys we actually want to keep (Stevens, Parham, Phillips, Sheek).

If they go, its because Shaka moved on to another school.

QuoteBut Smart is steadfast in his belief that incoming portal players should not be paid more than guys who are already in the program. There's a tier-system that Marquette employs when paying players, and Smart is loathe to depart from it.
