On another note I don't want to get muddled with the above:

People who haven't worked with special needs individuals, but believe they need to speak on their behalf always fascinates me.

One thing I always loved to do was bring new case workers (almost exclusively early college grad white females) who thought they were going to change their new charges life, or be the sped version of the freedom bus was to bring them to the center we used as a day program. Please come in and meet your individual on their level. Without fail one of our individuals would come up and greet them in their own way.

Without fail this always reacted in the new case manager jumping or screaming in fear. To which i would always reply "really????". The older case managers did love to shadow on those.

If that doesn't do it for ya, imagine this. The ringer, the movie, probably the most accurate movie made in regards to special needs individuals. That movie would never be made today.

I understand the way you feel, but the word makes people here feel uncomfortable.

Let's just agree that going forward we call them other stuff

I agree that there's been a shift in the culture regarding usage of the word.  And I can't say I necessarily disagree with your usage of it here.

But it also feels like a "pick your battle" kind of situation.

As someone who actually (for many years) worked close with special needs individuals, it brings me a great chuckle when people who don't, advocate got them.

I think my most belly filled laugh was when someone told me retard was a bad word, and we should use "silly brains" instead.

I had to a) tell her the use of silly brains was far far far more offense, and b) did she think i ever referred to a special needs individual as "retard"?

I'm not even trying to be confrontational or claim you're an pretty boy or something. I'm just genuinely asking you to rethink your use of that word. It's derogatory and hurtful to people who have special needs. It's similar to beejay insinuating being gay is a negative and something to be ashamed of. I guess my question would be if you don't find the use of the word to be a bad thing, why wouldn't you use that word with your clients with special needs?

Nope. Absolutely unnatural carnal knowledgeing not. You don't get to absolve yourself when you not only voted for this crap, you are still loudly and proudly supporting it.

YOU are accountable for murdering fishermen, murdering people in order to steal another country's resources, and placing an American Gestapo on the streets to terrify and murder. It isn't ONE person, it's everyone still waving their Trump flags, like you.

You'll happily support the next resource grab in Greenland, the snatching of political enemies off the street, the rupturing of NATO at Putin's request, and Trump's paramilitary intimidating voters in the next election. Oh, you might briefly have minor qualms, but Rupert Murdoch's cadre of fascist bootlickers will soon sooth your nerves.

Nope, you are 100% accountable for all of this.

Working at Special Olympics events, I have gained an incredible respect for the parents of special needs kids. The use of that word to describe children who were born with a condition not of their choosing is disgraceful, and using it casually to describe others for a political disagreement shows incredible ignorance on the part of the user.

"Ignorant" or "clueless" or any other words describing anyone who willingly ignores facts or only watches/listens/reads news from souces who will tell them what they want to hear are fine. And that goes for people on both sides of the political spectrum.

Very fair point on your second sentence. Note my first signature. My presence on this thread is not an endorsement of "the other side". While I hold them partially responsible for the current regime due to their inability to comprehend that many voters were not buying what they were selling, the decision to give a second term to someone who made his intentions crystal clear (that much I will give him "credit" for!) makes those voters responsible for his actions.

In the past, I occasionally voted for a 3rd party as a protest vote when I thought both parties had CRAP candidates. This past time I left that portion of my ballot blank. Like just about any voter, I wish others had voted as I did to send a message to BOTH parties.

Spaniel with a Short Tail

Interesting take. I certainly get the point you are trying to make re protest vote to send a message to both parties. I take the position that I do not miss any votes in any election and find some reason why one candidate is more appealing than the other. I didn't have an issue with this in 2024 presidential due to the unpopularity of one of them but the last Chicago mayoral election really tested me. I recall being in the voting booth still undecided because I disliked both of them before taking a deep breath and making a selection. As a country we need to find a way to get back to these days.

I appreciate the mods tolerance with this thread and I wish the posters here could avoid being so personal with the insulting language going forward.

Nope. I try not to give out personal information to online strangers, particularly supporters of fascism. America's Gestapo doesn't need any help.

Besides, it's particularly hard to figure it out.
