The unfortunate thing is that James Stockdale lived an amazing and accomplished life, and was a legit American hero, but this is how most people know/remember him.

Actually what they remember was the SNL parody of this which makes him seem way more unhinged than he actually was. Because he was nowhere near as nutty as I thought he was when I watched this clip.

It's not all bad, he gave the country a conveniently misrepresented role model/mascot for children instructed to emulate without questioning.  Even if that guy would be vomiting in disgust at the cynical co-opting of his death against all his known beliefs.
