At the scrimmage.  First member of the team in a walking boot.  Cody Hatt.

Nigel and Stevens were awesome.  Both are very ready to play day one.

Chase is our best player, as expected, but based on how the teams were split he was forced to play a lot of PG today instead of being able to just attack and shoot from the wing.

Ben Gold is better, but I dont see the star jump.  Just a really solid, veteran starting 5 man.

Royce didnt shoot well, but was good around the rim.  Clearly bigger, stronger than last year.

Zaide didnt force much in the halfcourt but is outstanding in transition.  So athletic and so fluid attacking the rim.

Owens is better.  Bigger, more confident.  Definitely ready for a bigger role this year. Didnt quite look like he's ready for a massive star jump to me yet.  Id bet on that next year for him instead.

Caiden didnt live up to the hype last year... but I thought he was the most improved player on the floor today.  First possession he faked a DHO and went to throw one down over Clarke.  A play he never could have made last year.  Looks so much more aggressive and confident.

Philips and Miletic are freshman.  Not ready for big minutes, but both had a couple flashes and can definitely see the potential.  Year 2, bigger impact.

Same with Clarke, and obviously Sheek.  Showed flashes, but one more weightroom year will be the key for both.

Overall, this feels like a tourney team to me.  Id say 7-10 seed though, borderline top 25 team.  Not a protected seed type.  Love the flashes from the freshman and sophomores though, got a chance to be special starting next year.

Love that detailed scouting report - thanks.

Can you talk a little more about what you saw from James and Stevens?

They dominated a weak defense. (/teal)

Didn't see the scrimmage, but I'm bracing myself for a lot of good and a little of rough (turnovers). Heart and effort will be there.

That's a really good review.  Thought Steven's and James both looked good as well.  Both are strong enough to play BEAST ball.  Steven's looked adequate from 3 (3 and D as frosh) and James looked better than Tre.

Clark is intriguing as his size just allows him to make some plays on both ends, but he may need another year of hitting the weights and buffet.

Shaka banking on Hamilton to do more this year.

Parham didn't shoot it well, but he looks like he really bulked up.

As a whole they looked bigger and more athletic than previous teams.  Not as skilled.  Warmup drills were a lot of aggression at the rim.  There's a focus of getting up and down the court quickly and finishing strong at the rim, as well as crashing the offensive boards.

Agree with everything JTJ3 posted above.

Last year the team struggled a bit to score in transition.  That could be a strength this year with the guards pushing the ball, Chase, Zaide and Damarius on the wings and Ben and Royce trailing for open 3's.

I could see as many as 3 players have redshirt options this year and all 3 could be rotation guys for 3-4 years after that.  I don't know if I have ever said that about a 13-14 man Marquette roster.

We actually struggled getting into transition (65th percentile in transition rate) but we were elite when we got out in transition. Our 1.38 ppp in transition was in the 99th percentile but because it was the lowest rate of Shaka's tenure we probably seemed less efficient there.

Anyone have any idea if Phillips and/or Miletic redshirting is being considered in addition to Sheek?

I thought Phillips showed way more than a few flashes.  He was very active on both ends of the court.  A few very nice blocks above the rim.  And, probably didn't make as many 3s as he would like, but took several, made a few, got fouled on a couple.  Shot looks good, he's confident and has the trust of his teammates and coaches.

I know there were some rumblings about him redshirting (because he and Pearson should both still be in HS), but to me he looks further along than Owens was last year.  He could stand a year to get stronger, but he is long, can shoot, and is very active.

As for the freshman, NJ and Stevens are ready now.  Phillips can contribute, but not sure much time he will get with Zaide and Damarius playing a similar role. Doesn't mean he won't redshirt, but I'd expect Militic and Pearson to be your 2 redshirts.
