From a Colorado Buffalo coaching pun rating standpoint, I have to give you all a Deion these.

does anyone know why MU is continuing with closed scrimmages instead of the exhibition games open to fans like Purdue @ Kentucky, MSU @ Uconn, Michigan @ St. John's (in MSG), etc? Not a criticism, just curious what the philosophy is.

Shaka has said he likes the scrimmages better so that there is more coach control over what is happening..ie, coaches from both teams can set up action within the scrimmage to work on specific parts of the team game.

Do the open scrimmage proceeds have to go to charity anymore?  I thought they did at one point.  If that is no longer the case and players can be paid from that extra source of revenue, I would expect that to change for MU in the near future.

Not anymore. That requirement was eliminated during the off-season and schools can decide how to allocate the revenue generated from these games.

Additionally, the requirement that preseason practice scrimmages had to be conducted in private and without official scoring was eliminated, so no more "secret" scrimmages.

One thing I did find interesting about the "secret" scrimmages were how coaches would play a full"game" then set up scenarios, like "Marquette down six with two minutes left," then do the same for the other team.

When I assistant coached for a highly competitive high school team in NC, my head coach loved controlled scrimmages. He thought they were the single best way to work on game situations in preparation for the season, while also fine-tuning both offensive and defensive game plans. So I would think many college coaches would value them similarly.

Anyone know if these are baked into the season ticket packages for those schools? If so, I'm a little surprised they would let Shaka do the closed ones if there was potential revenue left on the table for an extra game or two. When I had ST back in the day, I could have sworn they were but I could also easily be mistaken.

I think they let Shaka manage these things how he wants them managed.
