FIVE YEARS OF BIG EAST MEDIA DAY COACHES POLLS

In Part 5 of 25 YEARS OF THE AP TOP 25, it was seen that the AP voters fared quite poorly in their Preseason Top 25 Polls for the 2022-23 and 2024-25 seasons, with some notable omissions in other seasons.  In order to satisfy my epistemic curiosity, I decided to see if the 11 Big East head coaches fared any better in their preseason predictions. I normally abhor the mixing of apples and oranges in data presentation, but in this instance I will combine the yearly AP Top 25 Polls and Big East Media Day Coaches Polls in order to provide a fuller picture of both predictions and results.

For each of the five season, the data will be provided in the following format:

Preseason AP Top 25 Poll (October)
Big East Media Day Coaches Poll (October)
Big East Tournament Seeding (March ; with or  from BE Coaches Poll)
Big East Tournament Results (March; Semifinalists and Championship game)
NCAA Tournament Results (mid-March to early April)
Final AP Top 25 Poll (mid-April)
Comments concerning the Big East Media Day Coaches Poll in October

Note that each season, the AP voting for their penultimate Top 25 Poll is prior to the NCAA Tournament, while voting for the Final Top 25 Poll is after the NCAA Tournament's completion, thus reflecting the newly-crowned National Champion and the results of various upsets during the course of the Tournament. This study will only consider data since the present 11-team Big East began play in the 2020-2021 season.

Following the presentation of yearly data are COMPILATIONS AND ANALYSiS and CONCLUSIONS.

Comments concerning the Big East Media Day Coaches Poll in October

The coaches produced a mixed bag of predictions in October 2022, with only one team (Marquette) seeded more than 3 places different than predicted. The coaches predicted Marquette to be a #9 seed in the BE Tournament in March. But the Warriors surprized everyone by winning the Big East regular-season title with a 17-3 conference record,  a #1 seed in the BE Tournament, and a Big East Tournament Championship.

PART 3: CONCLUSIONS

1. On the average over the past five seasons, the Big East coaches were impressively accurate in their preseason predictions in October, with only one school (Xavier) averaging more than a one-place difference than predicted by the coaches.

2. On the average, Marquette was the most consistently under-rated team in the Big East.

3. On the average, Xavier was the most consistently over-rated team in the Big East.

4. The coaches produced a mixed bag of predictions in October 2022, with only one team (Marquette) seeded more than 3 places different than predicted. In October 2022, the Big East coaches predicted Marquette to be a #9 seed in the BE Tournament in March. But the Warriors surprized everyone by winning the Big East regular-season title with a 17-3 conference record,  a #1 seed in the BE Tournament, and a Big East Tournament Championship.

I'm impressed that he's so impressed with himself.

The only impressive thing is how big of a loser the guy is. I can't even imagine ever posting even a one sentence post once on a fan board of a team that actually cares about Marquette. The fact that he thinks anybody at Marquette cares anything about his copy and paste jobs with weird formatting is impressive.

I'll have you know, FF was so deeply offended by this post that he reported it twice (4 hours apart) and just may never return if we allow it to stay.
