Is it just me or has the board load times for posts increased significantly?

rocky_warrior

Perhaps just a clog in the tubes?  I'm not seeing anything crazy right now.

mu_hilltopper

I noticed some slow loading yesterday too.

"That's what she said."

I am experiencing slow loading, time-outs, and "no host found"

I'm on relatively quick wifi but I'm not at home, so I don't know if it's just me or my phone?

The rest of the Internet seems fine though

Resolved. In case an end time would benefit your investigation

Edit: I lied, continued issue

Yeah, in some update, the system got reverted to some relatively small default numbers (256 simultaneous max web clients, and 150 max database threads).  Fixed now.

Edit:  I'm still seeing some things taking longer than I'd like.  Might be time for a server reboot.

Edit 2:  reboot done.  We'll see...

Edit 3:  Something still isn't right.  I'll dig in more tomorrow.

Edit 4:  it seems to be getting worse.

What do you expect me to do without my scoop!

mu_hilltopper

It's odd .. it's the time to first byte that's delayed.  Initial delay, then the page loads instantly.

I don't think I fixed anything, but shut things down for a while and poked around (and ran database checks) and nothing obvious appeared. More of my Sat evening than I planned.

Maybe it will magically fix itself overnight (shrug)

Right, about 60% of my clicks happen instantaneously. I don't see any server hang-ups on the database, or Apache server (and things were still hanging when I kicked everyone off).

Ok, I think I finally got it.  Web server (security) config option conflicting with newer security options.  Keeping us all very secure by limiting access  :o

This thread was a fun read. Thank you for your service. 🫡

Getting lots of "Forbidden access" when trying to access the site.

Any thought?

I've not seen that - at all.  Desktop? Mobile?  Any other details could help.

I do have another tweak to try tonight, because the previous fix is leading to slightly elevated CPU load.

Mobile. Google Chrome. Google pixel.

I'll see if I can grab a screenshot the next time.

Well, at least I'm currently on the same platform  :P

rocky_warrior

Ok, well, I started looking into the high CPU load...and got it fixed...by shutting down the Wiki?

Best I can tell a botnet was hitting the wiki hard (and has been for a while).  There are currently 686 active web requests on the site, and 427 of them are trying to access images from our wiki.  And this happens continually.  I picked 3 random IPs requesting the pages and came up with Uruguay, Vietnam, and Indonesia.

So, for the moment, the wiki will just report errors. Taking it down has gotten us from super high load, to virtually nothing.  Will keep watching and try to get it back online (because I know it's super important to you all).

Rocky -

rocky_warrior

Well, with the time off, I did manage to get some patches applied to the site, and got the wiki back online.  Hopefully it doesn't cause problems again.

They're back at it, over 900 active connections on wiki images.  Wiki is still up, just removed the images. #someoneistargetingus

There are about ~2000 images stored in our wiki.  ~1000 connections every minute to get those images is foul play.

But the players underestimate me...

The Dang Dentists Of Scoop are something....

But neither they, nor keefe have the funds for this.  I've paid bot army's for things.  But we're talking terabytes of data, originating from foreign countries.

In a "normal good" month we push about 1.5 terabytes to the world.  Last November, when I finally caught this, we pushed about 6TB.  Still well within our (paid) limits.  But...I don't like to get played.

rocky_warrior

New month!  Full throttle!

They'll choke on the data!

rocky_warrior

Down to 59 requests per second.  Idiots.
