This was almost 20 years ago, but MU had it very clearly mapped out how to graduate from the business school in 4 years. This included showing how to do it with a double major.

Not sure if still the case, but a big selling point was they made it clear how to get done in 4.

While my son put down deposits on UW-Madison  :-\  .. he got off the waitlist for Michigan a few days ago.

Time to raise Scoop Plus prices so I can cover the $82k out of state tuition.

Surprisingly, UM may be the "safety school." Their standards for out-of-state applicants are significantly lower than those for in-state applicants, which is why their tuition is so high. That's something that really pisses off people in MI and was a F-you to the legislature for cutting aid.

From our experience this year, it is /massively/ difficult as an out-of-state student to get into Michigan.  As a data-point, our high school (which DPI rates as #1 public HS in Wisconsin) had 35 students apply to UM.  Young Hilltopper was the only one to get in -- and that was off the wait-list.

TBH, UW was his safety school.  In 2023, Wisconsin passed Act 95 which added that National Merit Scholar Finalists had guaranteed UW entry, so the game was over before he applied.  (he's wicked smaht.)

I am SOOOO happy to hear you confirm that Weasel U indeed was his safety school. That's awesome! Best of everything to Young Hilltopper.

We're also happy he takes after his mother.

Har de har har.

More likely a mixup at the hospital.

He's taller than me, bested my ACT score, and got into Michigan when I was rejected 37 years ago.  Oh, and was elected Prom King -- I never even went to prom.    :-\

Porky's Butthole

Another very interesting article on the same topic, published in New York Magazine just last week.  NYMag is behind a pay-wall but since Porky resides in the NYC Metro area and subscribes, Porky has attached a PDF of the article.

In addition to the attached NYMag article, Porky is an avid follower of MU student media and here's a related MU Wire article on how MU fared this cycle.  Porky is encouraged by this news.

Again, acceptance rate doesn't necessarily matter. It's a statistic that people THINK means something, but in reality it might just mean they got more people to apply. And they did! My undertanding is that the applications went up nicely. Whether or not that had an impact on the quality of student who deposited isn't touched on in this article.

However what DOES matter is the net tuition figure going up. That is a direct result of an increased endowment and focusing on high demand and high revenue programs like engineering, business and nursing.

Marquette takes the commitment to graduating in 4 years very seriously.  It's one of the ways they sell the higher tuition cost.  Low tuition is less of an advantage if it takes you 5+ years to graduate because you can't get into the classes you need.  Also, Marquette offers way more classes over the summer and winter break (at a reduced rate) than they did back in my day, and many of them are online, so you can take them from home if you don't want to stay on campus for them.

If you take a full load of classes every semester, pass those courses, and don't change your major too late in the game, you will graduate from Marquette in 4 years.
Have some patience, FFS.

While there are some exceptions, you can say the same about pretty much any public university these days.

In fact, UW-Madison's four year graduation rate is higher than Marquette's.

Most of the stories I heard about kids not being able to access the courses they needed to graduate on time involved state schools outside of Wisconsin.  I don't think I ever specifically heard of that situation at Madison.

I fully acknowledge that this is all anecdotal.
