For the first time since the NHL put a franchise in Detroit in 1926, the four U.S.-based "Original Six" teams - Detroit, Chicago, Boston, NYRangers - will all miss the playoffs in the same season.

Normally a WC spot at the final hour is pretty blah. But very pumped about this season.

Everything was building towards next year and beyond with all the controllable talent plus the massive contracts of Parise and Suter finally being off the books.

This year was all gravy. And doing it with so many injuries is even more incredible. Probably get pasted 4-0 or maybe gentleman sweep in round 1. But idc.

If a Canadian team wins the Cup this year, that whole "Canadians are so polite" stereotype will be crushed in seconds...and justifiably so. There will be giant "F You" parades across the country.

The OT was almost anticlimactic after Winnipeg's incredible comeback in regulation.

My favorite part of a playoff hockey game is the last 2 minutes of a 1-goal game, when the team ahead is desperately trying to hold its lead and the opponent is desperately trying to score.

After last night, I guess that can apply to a 2-goal game, too!

3 of the 8 remaining teams are Canadian. If one of them win, its city gets to be the capitol of our 51st state.

I agree. In OT, neither team wants to make a mistake, whereas when one team is down in the waning minutes of regulation, it's an all-out blitz by the team trailing. Just last month, Vancouver scored three goals in the last minute to beat Dallas. 

I like your idea too. I would imagine Donnie is cheering for Edmonton in that scenario, considering Alberta has been called "The Texas of Canada."

Best of the mediocre options.  Utah Hockey Club would have been beyond lame.  Utah Wasatch was one of the worst name options I ever heard, and then replacing it with Utah Outlaws was just generic.  Colorado Mammoth are already a lacrosse team in Denver, so its not as totally unique, but its a good logo and the color scheme is cool with it.

Was personally hoping for Utah Yetis, that would have been dope.  Nonetheless, better than the Vegas Golden Knights, not as good as the Seattle Kraken.

I don't know if a Mammoth could skate, but they would be better than Hasek as goalies.

That's ridiculous, Yeti doesn't have a monopoly on the word Yeti, which doesn't even originate in the US.

fully agree, but the trademark they have is particularly strong when it comes to the simple use of "Yeti." Apparently, the biggest issue was on apparel, as Yeti had already applied to sell gear with "Yeti" on it.

I don't know that they could have won - appellate judges tend to give the regulatory agency lots of discretion - but even if they could have, the appeals process takes on average 15 months. Not sure the team really wanted to go another year-plus without a name on outside chance they win the appeal. The more likely outcome would be they lose - because most appeals fail - and they're back where they started.

I've been asked why there are so many more playoff upsets in the NHL than in the NBA. It's because so much luck comes into play in hockey.

I'm confident in saying that in the history of the NBA, there never has been a game-winning basket that went off of an opponent's hip.

Its one of the cruelest aspects of hockey.  My alma mater, Miami, lost in the NCAA Championship about a decade ago in OT.  The game tying goal with less than 30 seconds left deflected off a defender's skate and in off the post.  The game winner in OT bounced off another attacker's thigh and literally BLOOPED up and over the shoulder of the goalie.  No more cruel way to lose than watch a puck flutter in the air but everyone's momentum renders them useless to knock it down and the goalie moving down into a crouch watches it float over his shoulder.  Just gross...but exhilarating if it goes your way.  That's why you're coached from a young age to just get pucks on net no matter how you do it.

Here was an "X" exchange Sunday between Florida Panthers vice chairman Doug Cifu and a Maple Leafs fan who calls himself Dr. Grizzo - one that led to Cifu getting suspended by the NHL:

they haven't been happy since 1967, which was their last time even making the Stanley Cup Finals.

Other than Winnipeg, every other Canadian franchise has made the finals at least once since 2004.

I still root for Carolina so I watched most of the games, and you're right - the Canes' defense was stifling. Hope they can keep it going for two more rounds!

The way the Canes play D reminds me of the mid-to-late-90s Devils and their neutral zone trap and Red Wings and the "left wing lock."
