I did not get the feeling Shaka wants to use the portal.

It changes the entire dynamics of the team.
He believes in his system and so do the players.

Him calling out the hypocrisy of some coaches says to me he has chosen his path.

Stevie's answer to a portal-related question was outstanding.

"I feel like it would be impossible to tell coaches, teammates, each other, that we're going to a different school. Because of the relationship we have, how much we've been through together, how much we've helped each other get through. That just seems impossible.

"Coach makes us want to prove him right because, obviously, if we don't win, the media's gonna say we shoulda gone in the portal."

Yep.....he doesn't want to......and it creates an environment where they all want to prove that the faith they have in each other is rewarded.

If it doesn't work going forward he will make adjustments........but we should all trust in our beliefs.

He never says he will never use the portal but it's clear how he wants to run the program.

As fans we should all be proud that this man is running our program............it's sad that some it appears are not.

That Wade/Diener hype video on MU'S instagram is inspiring.

The shaka sign, sometimes known as "hang loose", is a gesture of friendly intent often associated with Hawaii and surf culture.

Yeah, he keeps saying it.  I guess we have to believe him until proven otherwise.

Here is the AP article on Marquette that stemmed from this media availability:

https://apnews.com/article/march-madness-marquette-transfer-portal-shaka-smart-61770c92cc6a0d064971bddc38d35429

It was obvious that the writer was going to take the "Shaka Smart is the one coach who doesn't use the transfer portal" angle because of the questions he asked both Shaka and the players.

To us, it's an old story. But this piece is for a national audience ... and given the landscape of college sports, it's a legit article.

I'm too lazy to go back and listen to the press conference, but IIRC Shaka did say something along the lines of that if it's proven this doesn't work, he'd have to re-evaluate his strategy.

Shaka did say the approach will be "stress tested" next season after losing Kam, Jop, and Stevie.

Hypothetically, if next season's team doesn't make the tourney (which I don't think will happen), that doesn't mean I think Shaka should pivot.

What Shaka's critics conveniently forget is that several seasons are necessary to determine if his system will be successful. They want results right now!

Secondly, what constitutes success? A natty? Or an FF or EE every year? And who decides what the bar is?
