Self inflicted.

That is a huge part of the problem. Even if we picked up a player or two in the portal, the roster is a recruiting miss. Way too many projects, the whole front court is a disaster. Looking like we need some major help.

This is great being the Ted Thompson led Packers of NCAA. Build from within, don't take people from other teams/ programs, refuse to do what literally everyone else is, relationships, culture, blah, blah, blah.  And history is clear how this worked for Ted.  He caught lightning in a bottle one year, otherwise season after season of disappointment and underachievement.

To me the issues go deeper than Shaka's use of the portal. The talent identification has not been as good as it needs to be.

Players also have not developed as they should. The lack of development of Gold offensively is really stunning to me. Gold is 6'11" and he has not posted up once in his career that I can recall. He's essentially a mediocre 3pt shooter who can be defended by a player a foot smaller. I really don't think that Gold's complete lack of an inside game is on Gold. That's on the coaching staff.

The three-happy offense hasn't been working for some time. MU started hot today and then reverted to the mean. The offensive philosophy needs some reevaluation.

There's no excuse for MU to be as bad as they are on defense.

I always hear great things about Todd Smith but Parham doesn't seem very strong with the ball.

How common is it for a solid program with no players lost and no coaching change to not just regress but fall off a cliff?

I don't think Gold was ever going to be a back to the basket guy.  That's just not who he is and that's fine.  But to game in and game out be left with wide open looks and not be able to knock some in is just mind boggling from a senior and guy recruited as a shooter.  His shot is flat again, not that anyone on the staff seems to be able to fix that problem.

5 years in to Shaka and worse than we were with Wojo in his final year.  Yikes

When an opponent switches and a guard ends up on Gold, Gold should be able to take him inside. He can't because he doesn't even have the most basic of post-up moves. He doesn't need to take up permanent residence on the block to be able to take advantage of what the defense is making available. Instead he just sets screens and runs to the 3pt line.

As for his shooting, MU's staff appears to have overemphasized speed of release. Pro teams have dedicated shooting coaches. MU could use one.

No players lost?  We lost a ton from last year.

No players lost before exhausting eligibility. Nothing significant has occurred that was unexpected.

Like 95% of the NFL wish they could've had Ted's success. Similar to the percent of college basketball programs that would take Shaka's level of success.
