yeh, I am good with the Patriots...

Funny line in The Athletic:

The Colts have the same record with 44-year-old Philip Rivers (0-2) as they would have if they just went with rookie Riley Leonard. But at least they're getting Rivers some more reps for next season.

Lions REALLY not happy they had to play thanksgiving and Christmas

tower912

It looks like the old days when Stafford (honestly, every QB in Lion history) was running for his life.  Need a functioning O-line.

In the end, just another team that did not meet expectations.  With changes looming in the offseason.

Can probably cross Shephard off the head coaching speculation lists for a couple more seasons.  Likewise Fraley.

Let's talk about the offensive play calling. Vikings are getting fast and relentless pressure, as they're wont to do. But Goff is getting zero easy buttons that he needs.

After all of this, though, they're going to win this game.

tower912

Doubtful.  And yes, a Goff weakness is hot reads.  Great at check downs, terrible at getting the ball out quick against a blitz.

Vikings have -7 net passing yards and are winning late in the 4th. Both these teams suck.

Nevermind. Happy to be proven wrong.

Ended up at 3. 51 minus 48 lost in sacks.  That is an absolutely wild stat.

A damned if you do, damned if you don't scenario.  Do you let Goff walk and try to find someone better or do you look at the other available QBs and pay market value?  Like so many other teams, Detroit ponied up.  And Goff has put up solid numbers.   But, the era of pure pocket passers is over.

I said a season ago I would rather have Love than Goff.  That hasn't changed.  But I would rather have Goff than cutting him loose and seeing what else Detroit can land with their cap situation.

Same old Lions.

Packers made the playoffs, but not much left in the tank due to injuries.  Would be funny to end the Bears or Seahawks fraud seasons in the first round.

Aj brown out due to wisdom tooth? Is that something that could have waited?

Maybe it was a routine tooth cleaning and the dentist screwed up so badly he accidentally pulled the tooth itself.

What a disgusting game. Does Shaka coach the Lions? Holy sh1t.

Jared Goff has a 70 million cap hit this offseason

Pakuni

Quote from: GB Warrior on December 25, 2025, 10:34:23 PMJared Goff has a 70 million cap hit this offseason

Restructuring contracts is pretty easy. I imagine he will not have a $70 million cap hit next year.

MU82

A team can get (and has gotten) to the Super Bowl with Goff at QB. He is the least of the Lions' problems. And like Pak says, his cap hit is unlikely to stay at $70M.

Same old Lions.

I think they're missing Ben Johnson more than a lot of people in Detroit would like to admit.

tower912

Perhaps.  I think they are missing Ragnow, Zeitler, Glasgow, (a healthy) Decker, Branch, Arnold, and Joseph as much.   4 starting o-linemen from the previous two seasons.  3 starting DBs.

Ben Johnson related, prior to yesterday, Detroit was averaging 30 points a game.  Goff had thrown for 4000 yards, 32 tds, and 5 picks.

However, the running game has been erratic, primarily because teams are starting to run blitz off the edge unencumbered.

So, to my eyes, it is an o-line problem as much as a scheme problem.

I don't want to diminish what Ben Johnson did in Detroit or what he is doing with the Bears.  But he and Campbell worked fist in glove on the Detroit offense.  Detroit is running essentially the same concepts and plays.   What we all saw yesterday is the difference between Matthew Stafford and Jared Goff.   Behind a sieve of a line that has him running for his life, Goff cannot come close to winning games.   Whereas Stafford could.   Goff needs a running game, needs play action, needs to have his feet set and the ball to come out on time.  None of which happened yesterday.

Mostly agree, though Stafford, as good as he was with the Lions, appeared in only three playoff games and lost all of them. The 2021 Rams, with whom he won the Super Bowl, had a good offensive line. To win it all, a QB needs an offensive line that can at least adequately protect him. Goff's statistics and record with two organizations show that he can win plenty with a decent line in front of him.

It is. But that means they will likely extend him and/or kick the can down the road. And extending him means you believe he can be the difference maker on a championship caliber team, or that you can surround him with one as they thought they had in 23. They undoubtedly will keep riding with him. But it's a tough spot right now.

tower912

Any time you choose your QB and pay him market rates, it eventually puts in you in a tough spot.  Kind of an interesting dichotomy in Detroit right now.  Frustration over Goff's contract and Baez's contract bumping up against outrage that the Tigers don't just cough up the $400m that Skubal wants. Along with whether to re-sign Branch and Jack Campbell.
