There is a huge difference between playing games and life & death.

Quote from: WellsstreetWanderer on December 30, 2024, 08:35:09 PMGave away the Panama Canal and caused Mullahs to take control in Iran. The best past President since Truman. His good works will be his epitaph

Well, we stole the Canal Zone fair and square. President Carter knew that and did the honorable thing by rectifying a wrong.

As to the Mullahs in Iran, do you really think the Mullahs came to power because of any action President Carter did? It was a revolution caused in no small manner because the Shah was a weak and repressive leader propped up by every President from Dwight D. Eisenhower to Richard M. Nixon. The mistake we made was fermenting revolution and regime change in the 1950s in Iran.

As to the Olympics, I can attest to the fact that the boycott led by President Carter was still being felt 17 years later. President Carter knew America stood for something and put our values as a centerpiece of foreign policy. His human rights approach to our foreign relations paved the way for his successors to pressure the Soviet Union.

Final thought: As I noted, President Carter wasn't perfect. He inherited a mess and, as President Joe Biden found out, Presidents pay a price for high inflation and high interest rates. President George H.W. Bush paid a similar economic price.

Our policy with regards to Iran was a disaster from the get go.  But oil companies made a lot of money for 25-years with the Shah and that's what really matters

Maybe. But will Creighton and St. John's?
They look like the class of league right now. Have not seen Johnnies play, but Creighton looks awesome.

Wonder what Carter's presidential legacy would have been had the Reagan campaign not interfered with the hostage situation

Interesting question. There's a lot of circumstantial information to believe there was backchannel efforts by Reagan's people to influence when the hostages were released. But there's no smoking gun and therefore no conclusive proof.

While an enormous number of voters made their choice in the last five days before the 1980 election, there also is no clear vision as to whether President Reagan would have won had the hostages been released. 1980 was a mean campaign all the way around.

Solve these issues and, while you are at it, solve the questions associated with the Kennedy Assassination.

That of a failed, one term presidency.

Actually there is.  Bill Casey confirmed.  There were some March 2023 stories with confirmations from those involved.

Carter would have lost anyway. Most people vote their pocketbook and with run-away inflation he had no chance. The same thing happened to Bush Sr. and now Biden. Trump lost because he didn't handle Covid very well. Obama had the wind at his back because Bush Jr. and the Republicans were blamed for economic crash in 2008.

If Trump can't lower prices or increase wages to make up for the higher costs the Republicans will pay the price come the mid-terms and in 2028.

The picture of him smugly smirking as he's striding up the steps pre-assassination is kind of amusing in retrospect.  Kind of a brutal "how it started/how it ended"
