Luke 6:45   ...A good man produces goodness from the good in his heart; an evil man produces evil out of his store of evil.   Each man speaks from his heart's abundance...

It is better to be fearless and cheerful than cheerless and fearful.

Speaking only from Tampa/St Pete perspective, I think it's too early to call it new normal. I have a couple neighbors/friends down here who are locals who never saw flooding like Helene.  But otherwise, they said the hurricane was nothing that unusual until then. And a hurricane starting in the gulf and slamming straight east into middle of Gulf Coast Florida is super rare. If this happens next year, maybe it's a different story.

I don't think Ian and Milton are the same situation, but YMMV

I tend to agree with you JWags.  This one looks much different to me.  I hope you have gotten out safely.

How do we feel about the folks that have decided to "tough it out"?

I hope they stay safe, above all else.

Plus it's nice to have dopes like that around so the rest of us can feel superior.

Brother Pakuni:

I suspect you don't live in Florida. If you did, you would know that after Ian, our state government had destroyed bridges to barrier islands on the west coast rebuilt in seven days.

Not to be a fact checker here, but the bridges were never destroyed. The causeways between the bridges washed out from the storm surge.

Not minimalizing the undertaking as I've talked with contractors involved, but no bridge is ever rebuilt in seven days. The causeways weren't rebuilt in seven days either, enough sand was dredged to make the causeways passable for emergency vehicles.

Keep watching the path. Our roof was damaged from Helene. Hoping are spared the heaviest winds.

Storm Surge is an issue. Our dunes were just rebuilt. They survived Helene but not sure how well they do on Milton

Pretty much resigned to the fact that our business interests will have some total losses.

A friend of mine just texted me and said his Dad is riding out the storm at Siesta Key. I sure hope he is high enough up in the building.

Won't matter if the building is knocked down. Seriously there is zero reason to do this.

I do not disagree. That said, if my Dad was still alive, he very likely would have ridden it out. He was about 2 miles inland and on second floor and it would have been a fight to get him to evacuate.

A high school friend of mine that lives in Fort Myers had his flight to MKE cancelled at the last minute. He drove to Miami this morning and riding things out there. He has lived in SW FL for decades and this is the first time he has left his home well in advance of the storm. He definitely is taking Milton seriously.

My wife has family in Cape Coral who were forced evac.  Has family in Ft Meyers and Sarasota too... who are planning to ride it out.

They're fools to stay.

I did hear back from my friend and his Dad actually downsized places in Sarasota and is now about 2 miles inland, not on the beach. My buddy's place is on the beach but pretty high up in the building.

My wife and I are on a long-standing vacation in Eastern and Central Europe. That said, we are watching our home through a Ring doorbell. Lots of rain, tornados nearby but so far so good.

The folks on the west coast of Florida have a very rough 24 hours coming. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers.

You think a storm is going to knock down a high/mid rise? When's the last time that happened? Unless the building is 50+ years old, I'd bet almost any money it's hurricane rated.

I'm not saying it's wise to stay...even with hurricane grade windows, power could be gone for days/weeks, waters could strand you, etc...but a building collapse wouldn't be the concern IMO

I have no idea how tall the building is but thanks.

There are going to be a lot of manatees stranded after this hurricane.

Muggsy, should we organize a rescue mission.

Seriously, this is prime manatee habitat and these storm surges have a tremendous impact on them and their food sources. After Helene already there were numerous rescues necessary as the storm surges stranded some manatees in inland ponds.

Save the Manatee Club has been working hard but they haven't been reachable since 1 Eastern yesterday.  Florida Fish and Wildlife have also been doing the best they can.  It appears that Tampa dodged a bullet but I don't think we'll know the full picture until tomorrow morning.

Trip field is a relief staging site. Sad that those folks will have to endure that. It isn't like most stadiums. Less concrete, more pressed metal. Like state fair rides. Hope the responders ride it out okay.
We had a several hour period of dodging tornadoes.a few touched down within a couple miles of our house. Since dark, nothing more than wind.
Friends in Ft Myers, Bradenton and Orlando faring well so far.
