We have the potential to win it all, but I expect us to come out winning 2 out of 3 regardless of which side of the bracket we fall on to call it a successful tournament.

Really want to be on the winner's side. First round is important.

Agree. I'd say 2/3 on the winner's side after rd 1 is where I'd like to see them.
Assume what I say should be in teal if it doesn't pass the smell test for you.

Lose first game, and it winds up being a blah tourney for us

Sad, but w Chaminade the highly likely game 2 in a loss scenario, yuck

Shaka and the team probably won't even show up.

Yup. And I don't want a win against D-2 Chaminade clunking up what I anticipate will be an otherwise sterling 2023-24 season record.

With apologies to Wades, the most important game of the non-conference season is UCLA. Win and we are pretty much guaranteed two more Q1A games. Lose and you get a scrimmage against a non-D1 team and a wildcard in the third round (could see it still being a Q1A or falling to Q3).

I do know, Newsie is right on you knowing ball.

Beating UCLA is the most important thing we can get out of Maui.

Lose 1st game 2-1 UCLA must be good
Win 1st game 1-2 UCLA must be average

Lose first, can only go 1-1 or 0-2

Beating UCLA likely insures a pair of Q1A games after. As others have noted, it's the most important non-con game we will play because facing Chaminade does nothing for us.

Let's just win all three and be ranked #1 on November 27th.

That would be my preference as well. Hot take, I know.

Not just lately, we've never beaten them. We're 0-4 against UCLA all-time, which is the most losses to any one opponent without ever securing a victory.

This is BY FAR the best Marquette team ever to play them though.

UCLA might beat us again, but it will have had little to do with any of the 4 previous losses to them. Maybe there could be a tiny carryover from last year because so many of the main characters are the same (especially for MU) ... but - crazy me - I doubt the loss to them in the 1949-50 season will have much bearing on next month's game.

It won't, similar to how Rick Mount didn't have any impact on our games with Purdue in 2018 (blowout home loss) or 2020 (first win against their program). Merely stating that us losing to UCLA is something that has previously happened 100% of the times we've met.

There’s no way Marquette can beat UCLA, imo.

0-2 to Ucla & gonzaga on a neutral court isn’t the end of the world, I guess.
