Yes, St. John’s is clearly a more dangerous team.  Butler is arguably the least talented team in the conference IMO.

St. John's lead Marquette by 7 at halftime in New York and played their best offensive game of the season today.

Neither was good enough to beat Marquette.  I'm ok with either opponent.

These are all the right responses - we're going to have to face teams much better than SJU and Butler to cut down the nets at MSG and Houston.

But COLE gonna COLE.

Opponent no matta
MU can beat either one.
Again.

As for St. Johns - with any normal officiating crew, 5 of them would have fouled out before the 12 minute TO in the 2nd half.

In today’s game, St. John’s hit a 70-foot three pointer to end the first half, another three where the guy was fading away out of bounds after just stealing the ball, and one more where the guy was in the air bobbling the ball and ended up tossing it in the general direction of the hoop, which resulted in a four point play.

I agree that St. John’s is more dangerous than Butler, but they got 10 points today by sheer luck.  That’s quite a lot.

I absolutely do not want to face StJ’s. IMO, Marquette can have a bad game, i.e. foul trouble, shooting, whatever, and beat Butler. StJ’s does have talent. I’d prefer the Warriors avoid the Redmen on their court in the BET.

I still remember the consternation on Scoop when we had to face St. John's in our BET opener in 2019. Several Scoopers "guaranteed" we'd lose. I even won a couple bets after Marquette won by 100 points. And that was a much better St. John's team, as well as a fading, poorly coached Marquette team.

I know that fretting about games against cruddy opponents is part of what fans do -- we've seen it here this season going into games against DePaul, Butler, Georgetown, St. John's, Georgia Tech and even effen Radford -- but I have absolutely no concern about facing St. John's on Thursday. Or Butler, obviously. They really suck.

St John’s was pulling shots out of their asses yesterday to make the end close.  The chances of that happening again are nil.

Weren’t you championing the “What Marquette teams have done in the past has nothing to do with what they’ll do this year” train going into the at Butler game? Now you’re bringing up past MU/SJU BET games to determine what’s going to happen in the matchup this year?

Yep. And 10/20 on three pointers. What are the chances they can do that again at MSG? Pretty sure they did not average 50% this season. Also 89% FT shooting.

I had a strange feeling that the miracle 3 at the end of the first half would come back to haunt us, and it nearly did. Anyone think they can do that again?

The only thing working against us-and it may be huge in a close game- is SJ being the home team on the court.

Well yea, if we can’t we are out of the Big East Tournament.

I wouldn’t necessarily say in trouble though, because we almost couldn’t beat them yesterday and I wouldn’t think Marquette is in trouble.

We are at the elimination stage of the season, it’s a whole new ballgame with an entirely new set of rules, the rules of the bright lights and the win or go home rules.

Yep, you’re correct. At this point of the season matchups really matter.
It’s not that Marquette should fear either side they might play, it’s just that one would seemingly be a better matchup than the other.

Soriano feasts down low and StJ bullies. They will do more of that on Th if they play MU. It’s fine, because Marquette will see that again in the dance so they have to prepare for it, but they are likely the worse of the two matchups.

That said, this is actually the first year in a long time where I didn’t really care who was on Marquette’s side of the bracket, and it’s a good feeling.
Just means that this squad has had such a magical season that it doesn’t matta to me.
Bring on StJ, bring on UConn, no matta.
That doesn’t change the fact that UConn is probably the worst matchup for Marquette and StJ is a worse matchup than Butler.

What some call angst, others call respecting opponents and recognizing that stuff happens, including upsets in sports.

Even if I think MU would or should beat either Butler or St. John’s on Thursday, I personally think that SJU is more dangerous and creates some personnel challenges for MU that Butler doesn’t. So, I’ll be rooting for Butler on Wednesday to either win or make SJ exert a lot of energy to win.

After Thursday, MU will only be playing teams they CAN beat, not teams they SHOULD beat. MU would be an underdog against UConn and probably a tossup at best against Xavier, Creighton, Providence, or Villanova.

Anyone who thinks MU SHOULD beat any of those teams wasn’t paying attention to how tightly contested MU’s games against those teams were, especially when they were at full strength.

I think Butler would be easier to beat than SJU at the garden.  I don't think coming back from 19 down on the road was a fluke for SJU. I think they found their cheat code for playing MU.  I think their underachieving roster is a more difficult match up for MU because of their bulk and mass.  I think they will put their heads down and attack the basket for 40 minutes instead of 30.  I think they will have the crowd and the whistles.  Part of the crowd will be fans from other schools wanting to see the 1 seed go down.

So, yeah, go Butler.

Afraid of SJU?  Not really.  Respect for what they pulled on Saturday and aware they can just as easily do it at MSG?  Absolutely.

I agree with your analysis.  Matchups matter.  St John's is a physical, athletic, capable team that is much better without the clown Curbelo.  Plus, St. John's essentially is playing a home game.

Yes, we should win given how we've played this season, but let's not forget the 2003 Final Four team lost in the first round to the C-USA tournament to UAB...coached by....Mike Andersen.

Putting their BE season in perspective, their one big W was @ UCONN. Four of their seven Ws were vs.3-17 DP and 2-18 GT.

While I am sure they aren't going to repeat their exact performance, SJU is responsible for two of the seven best EFG% performances against Marquette this year.  Another way of putting this is that two of SJU's top three Big East offensive shooting performances have been against Marquette.

It's not unfair to say that its not a great match up for our defense.

Thank you for that set up.  The punchlines  are endless.

My wife wasn't around, so I was allowed to think.
My brain is tired and I am done thinking for the day.  Time to sit back and watch/listen to (insert your least favorite media outlet here).
Will thinking get me booted from scoop/meat eaters?

Absolutely.

Kind of like when Butler had given the Big East the blueprint on how to slow Marquette down when they played a close game at Fiserv.  Wait, never mind.  We ran them out of the gym next time we played them.

I think going from down 10 with 23 seconds to play to having a free throw to send the game into OT is pretty dang fluky.  We'll be fine.

I think so too. Way too much worry here over SJ. And yes, we will be fine.

You did a lot of thinking in your post- six times!  :D  Agree that they will try to repeat what they did Saturday for 40 minutes, but really doubt that they will shoot 50% on 3s and 89% at the line. And that miracle 3 pointer? Not gonna happen again. Also agree not afraid of SJ.

Putting their BE season in perspective, their one big W was @ UCONN. Four of their seven Ws were vs.3-17 DP and 2-18 GT.

*3 miracle 3-pointers.   :D

Again, SJU only played 4 games at MSG - and went 2-2. It's barely a home court.

Does it still count as an away game for us for NET?

Everyone seems to be forgetting that it will be harder for MU to beat SJU for a third time, and the second time was hard enough, even without the fluky last 20 seconds

The bizarre thing about those miracle 3 point shots is that the 60 footer was probably the least unlikely of the 3 of them.

That’s good - I was starting to think this was a trap game.  👀

Truth is that any of half a dozen teams can win the BE tournament. This year, UConn, X, Creighton, and Prov have all lost to lower level teams. And, MU has lost to UConn, Prov, and X.  It is a crazy league this year without one truly dominant team.  Sure, I would love to see MU win the tournament, but, if they don't, I am not going to lose any sleep over it.  I would much rather see them win a few games in the NCAA.

Thanks for posting this. It sums up where I am, but I could not come up with the right words.

Uconn and Creighton (barely) are ranked ahead of us in kenpom.  So those two are dogs/tossups.  All other teams we will likely be favored.

It’s not about paying attention….

I would add Xavier, Providence, and Villanova to that list. When I see teams play twice and most of the games go down to the final minute or two, I'm likely to consider the third game between the teams something of a tossup.

In my book, if a team is favored by a couple of points, that is essentially a tossup.
