Quote from: JWags85 on August 07, 2025, 12:33:14 PMHonestly, the aquarium should be catching tons of heat.  An octopus in a touch tank is crazy, having a giant pacific octopus in an open aquarium with people reaching in is insanity.  Granted, I'm a bit of a saltwater fish/invert nerd, I can't even fathom who designed and approved the exhibit.  I've been to probably 25+ aquariums all over the world and Ive never seen such a set up for an octopus, much less allowing people to touch one like that.

Also, even if there wasn't an octopus, an unsupervised touch tank is absurd.  The Florida Aquarium in Tampa just opened a new touch tank.  Its got starfish and some coral/gentle anemones and slow/non moving things and there are at least 3 employees around at all times.  Same with ones Ive seen at the nearly any aquarium.

I hadnt heard about this situation until it was posted here.  After reading up on it, your thoughts are exactly what I thought as well. Apparantly this aquarium isn't accredited with the AZA which is a huge red flag.

Mom may have had some poor judgement, but the aquarium is the worst offender here

Quote from: Shaka Shart on August 07, 2025, 12:43:52 PMHave you ever pet sharks in a touch tank? They have one at the aquarium in Crescent city, California and the sharks enjoy it so much that if you do not pet them as they swim past, they will splash you. One shark only lets kids pet.

I had no idea sharks had that level of personality but it was pretty cool. Supposedly some species have a similar dynamic in dogs that they show familiarity and affection through petting. Pretty cool.

Yea, its pretty wild.  I had a similar discussion with a keeper at a small aquarium that has a ray feeding/petting exhibit. Similar to sharks, they are cold blooded and thus don't have as robust an emotional range as a mammal, but they have a pretty direct feedback loop that is like "hey, I enjoy being pet" and thus seek it out similar to food and clamor for it.  They set up a specific mini feeding for my son cause the place was empty and she was explaining how all the rays love and approach immediately to get fed, but as soon as the food is gone, you could see the couple that enjoyed physical touch would stay around and glide by for pats.

The smaller species of sharks and rays are really cool cause you can see some of that unique behavior and personality that people might not expect...without the intimidation or perceived danger.  Some of the bigger sharks can be friendly and almost playful seeking out affection from divers, but obviously that kind of flies in the face of the natural reaction to a shark in the wild.

Yea, the AZA accreditation missing is a HUGE red flag, then also the owner is the wife of a guy who had an aquarium in Portland shutdown and another chain of aquariums that had a bunch of complaints and problems and subsequently went out of business.   Place is just problematic all around.

Way better than having them languish at shelters, eating food that wanted animals could be eating.

Quote from: Uncle Rico on August 07, 2025, 09:15:44 AMI hope that buffalo was introduced to darkness.  Animals are here for 3 things:

1. To be eaten
2. To be hunted
3. To entertain

Once they leave those lanes, we must eradicate and punish them.  Most of you here are to soft to deal with these facts but trust me, if my rules were followed, things would be a lot different and animals wouldn't be causing death and trying to kill humans.  It's too bad such a small minority of animals give all the others a bad look but because of woke, we can't kill them.

The 🦬 did nothing wrong.

Jokes aside, those large water buffalo in Africa and Asia are GNARLY.  I'm pretty sure they are commonly accepted to be the most dangerous animal to hunt in Africa and as fearsome as hippos.  If they don't go down right away they will mess you up.  I remember seeing an interview with Forest Galante saying that a tiger is the only thing in Asia he'd fear more than the Asian buffalo variety.

Mountain lions are scum. Good thing this one was introduced to darkness.

Authorities shot and killed a mountain lion after an 11-year-old child was reportedly bitten outside a Malibu home Sunday, officials confirmed to KTLA.

What purpose do mountain lions serve?  Can't use them at the circus for anything.  Maybe we can weaponize them to eat the homeless?

I would root for the water buffalo over the hunter 1,000 out of 1,000 times.

They are apex predators.  I assume they prevent overpopulation of certain species.

They're eating the rabbits! They're eating the horses! They're eating the pets!

https://www.nytimes.com/2025/08/04/science/zoos-denmark-food-pets.html

A zoo in Denmark is asking pet owners to donate their animal companions — their guinea pigs, rabbits, chickens and even small horses — to feed to its predators.

In a Facebook post last Thursday, the Aalborg Zoo noted that it welcomed animals that, regardless of circumstance, might be nearing the end of their lives. These animals would be "gently euthanized" by trained employees and then used as food for the zoo's predators, like its European lynx, the zoo notes on its website. Lions and tigers are also part of the zoo's predator exhibits.

The donations would help the zoo mimic the natural food chain by feeding whole prey to its predators, the post said: "This way, nothing goes to waste, and we ensure natural behavior, nutrition, and well-being for our predators."
