The world's largest known group of wild chimpanzees has split and been locked in a vicious "civil war" for the last eight years, according to researchers.

It is not clear exactly why the once close-knit community of Ngogo chimpanzees at Uganda's Kibale National Park are at loggerheads, but since 2018 the scientists have recorded 24 killings, including 17 infants.

"These were chimps that would hold hands," lead author Aaron Sandel said. "Now they're trying to kill each other."

I have to post my Animal (almost) Attacks story from last night.  My dog was going bonkers barking at the coyote staring at him from the top of hill in my backyard.  I chased him off with a golf club as is the norm every few weeks.  I was wondering why one of the bird feeders was at the top of the hill and when did coyotes begin doing stuff like this?  My wife starts screaming for me to run quickly as she saw a "shadow" and as I did this I heard sounds of a large animal either climbing or descending a tree 30-35 ft away.  A Black Bear coming out of hibernation.  Of course I tripped and crashed in my getaway necessitating an ER visit.  My daughter was dragging the dog in the house in the middle of all of this.  All better than the bear saying hello with one of his paws.  Now of to Germany for a week with a gauze pad on my head.

Black Bears are not to be trifled with.  Yes, if he/she said "hello" it might have goodbye for you.   Sorry you injured yourself.

Quite a few myths regarding black bears dispelled on this site.

Since 1900, there have been a total of 61 people killed by black bears, so on average-one person in the U.S. every other year.

I startled one in the woods not long ago. At least I think it was a bear. It ran off so fast all I saw a huge black blur.  ;D

Too bad the bear didn't knock you down as it rushed to run off. That would be a much better story to tell about your injury than tripping and falling.  ;D

I feel bad for black bears.  Given what is happening in America, they won't be protected for long and they'll lose their habitat but loggers and developers will make an extra million or so, so that's the price you pay

The only reason black bears are able to terrorize god-fearing white folks is DEI.

Muggsy, some great news.  While I wish it were two brothers that shall not be named, this is just as good of news

These articles are always incredible for bringing hoards of comments from people who "love animals" but don't know a single thing about conservation, just that anyone hunting is evil.  That being said, this story made me sad cause ol Ernie had an INCREDIBLE mustache, that exact kind of mustache I would want and expect from  a trophy hunter.

Also reminds me of by colleague from Botswana who always reiterates they have always been INFINITELY more scared of elephants when out in the savanna/game parks than lions or leopards

I'm 100% on Team 🐘 🐘 .  There used to be 25 million of them, now there are fewer than 500K.  It's one of the greatest catastrophes in the history of planet earth.  Obviously they have incalculable strength and power.  They should be greatly revered and respected.

Mongooses deserve a ton of credit for having the ability to take them out.  Insane reflexes and elite quicks.  They also are immune to cobra venom.
