Fugitive Cows??

Apparently the Quebec police are at their wits end.  Their highly elusive cow population are escaping farms, then "hiding" in the forest, and destroying crops and other stuff in their path.  :)

Here in NM, we have a certain US National Forest where a rancher's grazing lease expired a while ago and he abandoned ~500 head of cattle within the lease.  Without upkeep to fences and gates being left open, these 500 have since increased in number and spread throughout a large portion of the forest...creating lots of unintended damage.   This will really make Muggsy happy... The FS's plan to address this problem includes going into the forest with ATVs and small helicopters and shoot the cattle, leaving them for the bears to eat.  There's more to this but I'll end this here.

I have a coworker who does that as a sidehustle. Goes up in his buddy's helicopter and shoots wild pigs for the forest service.  Thought he was kidding when he first told me

Wild pigs are super destructive.  They're also mean as hell and don't really have natural predators.

You have to ask yourself what is really at steak here.

Will they eat browse like deer during the winter?  Will be pretty skinny cows by the end of winter.
Would seem if the original farmers don't get them, let finder keepers.  Should fill a freezer with a year's worth of beef for a family.

30-50 feral hogs could do some real damage in 3 to 5 minutes.

Cows easily rival dogs as the dumbest "smart" animals.

My dad's extended family used to be dairy farmers.  I remember him telling me how his great uncle used to say cows were the only animal that recognized their owners, held grudges against people and other cows, could understand commands...yet you'd have to actively work to prevent them from killing or maiming themselves at any opportunity.

I lied in my original post... ATVs aren't going to be used.  They'll be going out on horseback  8-).  The terrain is a bit to rugged for ATVs.

How do cows even learn to drive ATVs and who thought it was a good idea to teach them in the first place????

You didn't read clearly.  The ATVs are riding the horses to shoot cows and game thread posters.

I see a lot of cattle trucks on the Interstate. I much prefer seeing cattle going on vacation rather than them heading into the woods to be shot.

Know a guy from the college station area that shoots them on his ranch from his truck using an AR15.

He says the big ones are nasty…lets them rot where they fall.

Ehhhh, I'd say they could go through a body that weighs two-hundred pounds in about...eight minutes. That means that a single pig can consume two pounds of uncooked flesh every minute. Hence the expression: "as greedy as a pig.
