2022 US Open Thread
« on: June 12, 2022, 05:12:34 PM »
Rory McIlroy just won the the Canadian Open against a star studded leaderboard . Will be interesting to see if he can carry the momentum into The US Open this week at The Country Club in Brookline MA

Justin Thomas continues to be in good form and maybe he can make it two majors in a row

I heard MBS bought this event, and it’s now named the S.A. Open.

Looks like they are setting up The Country Club to play like an old school US Open course.

Looking at the course, a little heat, a little wind, and par will be a great score.   A lot of wind, and par will be a dream.

I hope that under Mike Whan the USGA simply sets-up the course to host a stellar tournament, but stops chasing the notion of par. I thought last year at Torrey was a step in the right direction. At Torrey, they produced a good event without the usual USGA clown show. It was compelling golf, coming down to the wire. Does anyone really care that Rahm shot 6 under? I venture to say, no.

Chasing par doomed Mike Davis' tenure and damaged a number of Opens.

I enjoy the carnage.

If it naturally happens, sure. But forcing it to happen is not a good plan. See Chambers Bay as to why.

It played the same for everybody.   Shootout between two leading players of the day.   Course needed to mature.

This is going to be narrow fairways, deep rough, small crusty sloping greens.   Old school.

Those sloping greens require extreme distance control to be on the right level. Would not surprise me if Morikowa showed up on the leader board Sunday

Straight hitter who manages his irons.  If he putts, you may be right.

Smith is too wild off the tee for a very tight course. He's currently 151 in driving accuracy.

I too keep coming back to Cantlay. In the top tier, I like Burns, Hovland, JT, Zalatoris.

As Rico stated, his performance in majors the last 3 years is not good. He has 5 wins on Tour since 2020, but not one Top-10 in a major championship.

To be honest, I like Rahm to repeat. Currently, #1 in strokes gain off the tee and keeping it in the fairway looks to be at a premium this week.
