[Cracked Sidewalks] Weekend Viewing Guide

Marquette is off this weekend, but there are plenty of games that can still have an impact on their eventual seeding. Cracked Sidewalks has your weekend cheering guide so you know who to pull for around the country:

Good writeup, but I'm sorry, there's no way I'm rooting for Illinois to lose to II,II.  Illinois needs to keep UW-Madison out of contention for the B10 title.

I don't think he said we should.

He did:

"Illinois at Indiana, 11:00 am, ESPN"

The bolded team is the one we "should" be rooting for.

That's one of the toughest ones. Best case scenario is a 1-point Indiana win that bumps Illinois down the S-Curve while not harming their metrics. I totally get your reasoning (also why I advise cheering for PSU even though Bucky winning helps our metrics) but in terms of best for Marquette, Illinois is right in that area where MU could pass them.

The bolded team is the one we "should" be rooting for.

First, I would agrree that it makes sense to root for the teams ahead of us in the Big East standings to lose, and for any opponent to win (e.g St. Bonaventure or West Virginia).

I think it's a bit hasty to say we should root for Indiana over Illinois or Penn State over Wisconsin.

It's not out of the realm of possibility that there be some combination of Indiana wins and MU losses that puts us closer to Indiana than to Illiinois on the S-Curve.  In that case, we would rather tag Indiana with another loss (helping us in a head-to-head seeding discussion) and pad Illinois' record (making our win slightly more significant).

I think I also bend toward thinking a UW win helps us more. The statment:. "Penn State beating UW-Madison would hurt our resume a little, but would also allow MU to creep closer to Bucky on the S-Curve"  assumes that we're going to continue to win at our current pace.

The first question here is whether creeping up (or even pulling slightly ahead) of UW is going to move us ahead when it comes to seeding--they still own the head-to-head matchup, and I could see the committee moving them ahead of us on that basis.

Second, similar to the IU/UofI case, there's a possibility we take a few more losses and drop relative to Wisconsin. At some number of MU losses over the next 7 games, it would be better for UW to have beaten Penn State because we'll need that bit of help with our resume.

Not quoting it all, but this was written to look at the field as it is, not to look at it as might hypothetically be. Reality is Marquette is favored in 6 of their remaining 7 and the probability is that they win 5. That means moving up is more likely than moving down. If you want to cheer for Bucky, I won't stop you, but I also won't disingenuously recommend it.

Look pretty soft for an Izzo team. They’ve made 11-22 from 3 and still down 16
