1.   The game changed when Morsell started the second half with energy.
2.  I'm not convinced that Shaka didn't let the first half play out as a teaching opportunity.
3.  Stitches for Kuath.   Good pump fake.
4.  MU has started slow in all of the buy games so far this season.   Finished strong.
5.  Shaka's team are going to pressure.  They are going to play fast on offense. They are young.   This is the team.  This is what we signed up for.   All of the whining in the world is not going to make MU stop pressing.
6. MU is going to struggle with wide body post players.
7.  Ellis wants it so bad.   Amused by the screamed obscenity.
8.  Nice double double for Osa.
9.  Walk ons!
10.  Time to gird some loins.

Oso has the highest upside on this team.

Bulk up more and he could be really fun in a couple years

Yes and yes.

Some people on this board need to manage their emotions better when we don't get out to an immediate 20-5 lead against cupcakes.

We knew this product was going to be infuriating, ugly at times, and have a tendency to play down to opponents due to the energy levels required to make it work.  But guess what - the other side of that coin means we're going to win a lot of games we have no business winning (Illinois), and I can guarantee right now we'll get tournament wins out of it somewhere down the line. Zoom out.

Given tonight's BEast results against cupcakes, the start wasn't unexpected. Our response was better.
Fun, sometimes frustrating team to watch.

Agreed. First half was a teaching moment. It was meant to be ugly. Not a year we will have many pretty wins. Tonight guys got some experience, no one got hurt, lessons were learned.

On to the next one. Let's make it a brawl in Madison

I'm looking forward to lessons being applied on Saturday.

Have no problems with pressing against certain teams and the the right moments against others.  There is a reason why our second halves are so good.  The press wears teams down.

It's like running 35 times with Derrick Henry.

2.4 YPC in the first half
5.8 YPC in the second half

That's not by accident

I disagree on the zone press.  I thought it was totally ineffective and good teams will shred it.  These are light traps and we don't get back to guard quick enough.  Now maybe we can apply more pressure man to man or trap harder but if teams dice it with a ginsu knife we're going to have to come up with auxiliary options.  It also can hurt us on the defensive glass.

PGsHeroes32

This isn't an insult to the team

But boy, we could lose 6 in a row quickly.

This schedule about to get brutal

I may have missed but why did Greg Elliott not play tonight?

It isn't a binary option. We will press a lot against certain teams, less on some, and even less on others.  This team is 10 deep.  It is going to be used and Shaka, the guy getting paid millions to make the decisions, appears to think it helps.

He did play tonight.

Stevie needs to take the open three.  Turned it over a couple times trying to attack the closeout, when the shot was the better option.

The three quarters press is much better than the full court press.  Takes just as much time off the shot clock, creates just as many turnovers, but creates less open space behind the press to attack, resulting in far fewer shots at the rim out of the press.  That's what changed the game.

The Lens

Was not able to watch the game tonight.  Were we able to score 50?

Sure, I'll buy that Shaka let the first half play out as a teaching opportunity. Not sure I'll buy that Morsell and Kolek combined for 0 points in 26 first-half minutes as a learning opportunity, though.

We simply need better from them, and we got it in the second half. If they play in the first half against Madison like they played in the first half tonight against a bad team that was missing its leading scorer, we'll be down by 20. But they won't (he said confidently/hopefully).

I am especially interested in seeing which Morsell shows up Saturday. We need him to be not just good but great.

The second half was fun, with everybody contributing as Jackson State wore down.

Yeah, unless it's something physical that would limit his playing time, I wouldn't be surprised if he's a mid-season transfer.

And onto Wisconsin, it can't hurt that Morsell faced them twice last season, and probably guarded Johnny Davis when he was on the floor.

He's a fifth year senior who could go anywhere as a grad transfer if he decides to stay a sixth year. Why would he transfer mid year?

Shaka gives his thoughts.

At 5:53, quite the wake-up call:

-I thought those other guys were playing with a bit more fight
-I didn't think he defended with the intensity he needed to have in the first half
-Greg's a good player and we need him to play a significant role
-But as a guy in his fifth year, he's got to lead from a standpoint of energy and effort
-He'll get another opportunity to do that
