Our press traps
« on: November 27, 2021, 09:43:02 PM »
Are we trying to control tempo with this strategy, get deflections, or actually force turnovers?  Because to me they don't look like hard traps at all and good teams will exploit them.  I also think it could lead to tired legs offensively.   It reminds me of these Octopus cage "experiments".  You know the ones where Mr. or Ms. Octo fake that they are trapped for awhile, before they proceed to escape as easily as Steph Curry drains a free throw?  Can we really "trap" all game vs. good teams, especially those with quickness, without it being a liability?

I think we are sort of "practicing" and will do it depending on the team we face. And we are trying to do all of the above. Ultimately Shaka will determine, too me the sloppy play and sometimes lack of focus during some plays is much more concerning including the amount of TOs against cupcakes, PRAY!
Goal is National Championship

The turns were not good to put it mildly.  But back to the traps.  They didn't look like actual traps to me unless my vision is failing.  In other words there was a huge amount of distance between the two guys on the ball which doesn't make much sense to me.  Once they are "broken" it"s essentially a 4 on 3 situation.  I get trying to practice it but doesn't it start with executing the first trap?

Not a full court press most of the time a zone press. Two different types. Zone press is not a "trap"

Some looked zone, some did not.  I can't imagine we will do this vs UCLA, Nova, UCONN, etc.

You give the look on every possession to see the passing progression the other team uses to beat the press, then, when necessary, clamp down on one to get a TO.

All of the above, Muggsy.   This is why you play eleven players.  This is why Shaka recruits the players he does.    To play this kind of defense.

Opposing coach on preparing for MU's press.    Maybe this will help answer your question, Muggsy.
