Hasn't even coached a game yet and Shaka's already built more perimeter and ballhandling depth than Wojo ever did.

Welcome to Marquette Chase!

https://www.muscoop.com/index.php?page=page4655

I thought Greg Elliot has two more years of eligibility, so isn't there only 1 open scholarship for 22-23 season? If I am wrong I stand corrected.

I'll be convinced after they play a few games.

Elliott does have two more years of eligibility but he won't count against the scholarship limit next season because of the COVID rule. So there are 2 open scholarships for next season still.

Nope, the D1 Council did not approve that proposal.

Better tell Butler, they've got 15 scholarship players on their roster right now.

After this year. Only last year’s seniors are exempt. The SEC proposed it for all SA’s enrolled last year but it was pretty strongly opposed across the membership.

Transfers always counted. You could only exempt returners.

It's Marquette, it's Marquette!

Very nice pickup. An athletic wing with upside, similiar to Emarion Ellis.

I'm thinking AJ Casey is the next target. His recruiting rankings seem to be dropping a bit, which might actually be good news for Marquette. Some of the tougher competition might back off a bit.

Casey would still be a great pickup.  He's the type of long, athletic forward Shaka likes to recruit.

I think we'll have to be looking for news on official visit(s) to find the next verbal or potential verbals.

So last year Jr's didn't get an extra year of eligibility?

No.  He's saying it's that they do get an extra year of eligibility but they will count against the scholarship limit. This year's COVID seniors don't

Major financial and recruiting implications. Outside of the Power 5 everyone was against it. What surprised me was the Big 14 opposing it.

But Greg was an academic senior last year and graduated. I heard he can take his COVID year this season and then appeal for a sixth year like Otule for his redshirt year (or graduate transfer) if he so chooses.

I likely am wrong so I'll defer to the professionals. However, Greg's case is an exception and to give credence to my point, MU lists him as a Redshirt Junior.

A student has 5 seasons to complete 4 seasons of eligibility . The 20-21 season does not count as a season. Therefore Greg has used 3 seasons to complete 2 seasons. So Greg has 2 more seasons to complete his remaining 2 seasons. He does not have to apply for a waiver.

I know these rules well, because one of my kids is in an identical situation as Greg ( in another D1 sport) . He is playing right now as a Graduate student and still has another year to play after that.

Whatever the rule, I would be surprised to see Greg back at MU for the 22-23 season based on Shaka’s recruiting so far and how many want to be in school for 6 years….
