Hurricane Ida

Level 4 hurricane going to crash into all of those overpopulated hospitals in Louisiana and surrounding areas.

Bad sign is that the water is so warm in the Gulf, it probably won't weaken as it nears landfall.

After a lot of study (and sharpie usage), Arizona seems to be in a lot of peril.

Some of the water in the gulf is over 90 degrees which will add significant power to that storm

We lucked out last week when the cold North Atlantic ground Henri way down.
I feel awful for Gulf Coast residents right now.

Does the sharpie image look suspiciously like a penis?   Maybe we should nuke the hurricane.

You never know what could happen but it appears Ida is extremely angry.   I know they reinforced the levies but this situation right now looks WAY worse than Katrina.  The experts are saying this could be the worst nat disaster in 150 yrs.  Awful, awful, situation.   I hope as many animals as possible got out of there along with people.

Maybe don't build a city below sea level?

OK, yes. But what do you propose to do with those already built?

Or those that were above sea level but will no longer be?

Relocate using federal and state/local funding.

Quite an undertaking. You should run for office with this as one of your platforms.

If I was going to run, it'd be on much bigger economic issues - M4A, public housing, UBI, etc. You know, things that would materially improve the lives of all americans.

Really need to stop the exaggeration with this hurricane. The flu kills more than this thing will.

Outside of human death #s, what about damage/costs to homes/business/infrastructure/etc?

This.

It's a borderline Cat 5 - but, it is hitting in rural areas and is fast moving. There will be some deaths, but hardly catastrophic.

I don't like to speak for others, but I think Fluff was referring to the comment "The experts are saying this could be the worst nat disaster in 150 yrs."

There will be deaths and a lot of wind damage, but it will not come close to the damages causes by some other hurricanes.

It's too early to know.  If it breaks the levy it  could be catastrophic.

No joke here, with the intersection of Ida and COVID-19 ...

From the NYT:

As the Delta variant grips the country, children who are not yet eligible for vaccination are at higher risk of being infected — especially in places where the virus is surging. A New Orleans children’s hospital had so many Covid-19 patients that a federal “surge team” was called in to bolster an exhausted staff.

I hope all of our friends in the northeast came out of the storm OK.

Even though Ida had weakened considerably from when it hit Louisiana, it caused more deaths in the northeast to go with billions of dollars of damages.

I've read several headlines the last two days about the storm "blindsiding" the northeast. I'm not sure why anybody should have been surprised that global warming is having this effect. It has been obvious the last 20 years, or more.

Nobody should be surprised by any weather event. They are all part of the new global-warming normal.

The problem we have in the North East is structural and geography , giant old growth trees and lots of pavement . We
sit at the foot of the Catskills.

Quite often we get hit by the remnants of these big storms and have major flooding and power outages .

It takes approximately 2 weeks for the water to drain down from the mountains into our area . For the most part it is not noticeable , however if the ground is already saturated with rain , it does not take much rain for a flash flood to occur.
When the ground is saturated it does not take much wind to blow these trees over . 35 MPH will do it .

The missus ran the local emergency planning effort for many years . I was involved with coming up with remedies for the school . These kind of events are expected and dealt with as best as possible . Unfortunately we need a modern day Hans Brinker .

An additional problem in our area is the train beds run perpendicular to a dam and parallel to the rivers. If the damn got hit by terrorists there is literally nothing to stop the water for 20 miles. In case a like this storm the train bed floods quickly and then flows into the rivers which are already high from the run off from pavement .

The only real solution is to restrict building in flood zones , which is not possible given the age and density of the Northeast .
