Shut the Covid board down?
« on: May 31, 2021, 08:26:26 PM »
Thankfully, the US appears to be on the brink of "containing" Covid.  The world has a ways to go, and is worthy of discussion.

BUT, it appears there are several ("both sides") that just want to bicker  about politics.

I'm leaning towards making the board read-only at this point, but willing to consider options.

Regardless, I've enjoyed chatting and learning here over the past year.  Cheers!

I’ve ‘enjoyed’ this quite a bit and learned a faster here then elsewhere across the last year+.

That being said I would go read only.  7 of 10 posts at this point are partisan or ignore at this stage.

I have actively posted on it, and it really was a good source of info, even the last months as partisan bickering got heavy, but its run its course IMO.  The specific COVID thread has been a disaster for a long time.

Could enforce the no politics rule with a one week ban to anyone who breaks them. Add an extra one week to each subsequent ban after inserting politics into a thread after a poster’s return from a ban.

That can be said about a lot of topics.  Lord knows scoop can run just about anything into the ground.   As opposed to the Bears management, St Louis baseball, Aaron Rodgers social skills, this actually is life and death.

Sure.  Starting it back up again in November when everyone is indoors, variants are swarming, boosters are necessary, and rates pick back up again will be a good metaphor.

It's not. This is an idiotic take, akin to those who are surprised when they get the flu despite having a flu shot. I'll let my sister who's still got Covid brain and can't smell sh*t that her and my brother in law who's definitely not mentally the same after multiple >105 fever spikes and O2 below 80 that they didn't actually have Covid because some dentist said it was over after they were vaccinated.

For me it’s mostly over, but still have an infant who obviously can’t get vaccinated. Luckily, it sounds like infants don’t experience much in the way of symptoms if they were to get it. But we are still being cautious with where we take her.

I agree it's mostly over, I went out to eat, have been to a few bars, had vaccinated friends over.  My point is it's still worth being cautious by not going to hang out with people who have been actively exposed for long periods of time thinking you're perfectly immune because you're vaccinated. That mindset certainly screwed up my family enough.

They contracted COVID and had all those symptoms/struggles after being vaccinated?

If not, you're blending two different discussions.

Yes they did. Pfizer & J&J. 4ever's being an obtuse about this because he wants it to be over and didn't want to take it serious from the get go.

I'm not saying we should always wear a mask or have never ending work from home, but if you have a friend who's exposed and isn't vaccinated don't think you're invincible and go over there for long hours. Sustained exposure and it can still get to you. Maybe my sister (Pfizer got it in January as she's a nurse, got sick in April) has terrible luck and maybe my brother in law (J&J but only had it briefly before exposure) but I can only say I wouldn't wish what either went through on anyone. And both were seriously ill despite what 4ever would like to believe.

Edited my last post to answer these questions.

Again hang out in public, go to bars, hang with vaccinated friends, but I wouldn't suggest having some unvaccinated people over and having sustained exposure when they could be carrying it and thus certainly wouldn't say "it's over once you're vaccinated"

Unvaccinated folks need to take their own precautions. Don't look to others to protect you. The vaccine is available for those who want it, free of charge, over the age of 12. Believe the science, its real.
BTW, please don't make assumptions as to what I did or didn't do, or how seriously I dealt with the thread of covid over the past 15 months. You don't know me. Be assured that I, my staff, and all patients were kept informed as to office procedures, protocol, for the good and betterment of all concerned. While we were not able to work remotely, I am happy to report that I, and my staff all remained healthy throughout the pandemic while providing a safe office for patients to receive care, even while working within 12 inches of patient's mouth and nose, hey?

I do agree with you, but there are exceptions. My fiance's grandfather, age 80, just passed away from COVID. He was 2+ months past his 2nd dose when he got sick. He had a clean bill of health pre-COVID.

You're not the only one who worked in a risky environment, my mom and sister are both nurses who volunteered in Covid wards, happy for your staff but that "even while working within 12 inches of a patient's mouth and nose" line doesn't resonate with me as getting you some type of clout or brownie points.

Bottom line is you're repeating a line that "it's over when you're vaccinated" and that "you don't get seriously ill". My personal experience is very different and effected my family in pretty awful ways, in fact I would almost guarantee my brother in law suffered permanent brain damage due to the motorcycle accident he was in when his fever spiked (how he was found to have Covid), the asphyxia from lack of oxygen, or brain damage from multiple >105 fevers, all after he was vaccinated. So of course i am going to passionately argue that you are flat out wrong with your simple logic as opposed to leaving leeway for the rare but possible instances where vaccinated people get ill. The data might be on your side, but stats mean nothing to the individual and in my case that was proven to be the case.

My assessment of your attitude towards this was based on your posting history throughout the pandemic, I did not suggest that you and your staff, were not taking Covid seriously as an office throughout the whole pandemic.

I had the opportunity to visit the bar I went to the weekend before the shutdowns for the first time (post-hike/and ski hangout on Mt. Hood). So good to be back. Upon entering there's a sign requiring masks UNLESS you show proof of your vaccination. We ate outside (an area they did not have before). We kept our masks despite being able to go maskless when we went inside to order a beer and use the restroom but it was nice being able to be outside without the mask on. Very few masks on the hiking trails too.

Another of my favorite beer bars had taken down the plexiglass around the bar. Still not bellying up but the bartender said he didn't feel like he was a zoo animal behind a cage anymore. Masks still required inside to order.

I think the restaurant industry is going to see some permanent changes from the adjustments they made.
-no more physical menus, using the QR codes instead
-more outdoor seating and doing it year-round in more mild climates. The city started a program last summer where restaurants could take up parking spaces in front of their businesses and it has proven very popular. One group of restaurants has built out along the entire block.

We were at a venue this past weekend with both QR code and paper menu. I opted for paper menu.
Now get off my lawn!

It will be interesting to see what changes persist and which do not. Florida passed legislation permanently allowing drinks to go. Why anyone would do that is beyond me. It has to be sealed and placed in the trunk. An expensive watery drink with my to go dinner isn’t my thing. I don’t see restaurants going out of their way to do all required for this.
QR code menus are likely to stay as is remote ordering via smart phones.

I would shut the board down and start a topic in the Superbar.  And enforce the "no politics" rule in the process.

The Covid Board has been the de facto Political Board almost from its inception. Some good information, no doubt - valuable even. But with very few exceptions, dripping in  politics of the lowest common denominator - the I’m good, you’re bad, I’m smart, you’re stupid kind - ad finitum, ad nauseum. Why stop now?

Same here, but the menues were not the full range as before the outbreak. Won’t it be harder to keep paper menues once they go back to their full slate of food and drink?

Ah Lenny, you're getting good at this victim stuff.

Because vaccination rates are up, cases and deaths are at their lowest level (in the US) since it all went to hell in late March 2020.

Folks are right "it's not over" - it's not completely over and may never be completely gone.  But this board has probably lived the majority of it's useful life.

Did I miss where he claimed to be persecuted?  There is crap flinging from all over the spectrum, in almost every thread, I’m sure he’d gladly admit plenty of it came from people he was more closely aligned with politically on the surface.

That’s so weird.  Especially the trunk thing.  I’ve had multiple to-go drink packages  that were done great.  Some had individual components with directions to put together yourself for mules.  Some had stuff like margaritas in a reusable plastic shaker that was sealed so it didn’t spill but told you to add ice so it didn’t get watered down.  It was a great way for restaurants to be creative and also convert some of their highest margin items to take out

QR code menus are great, but I think it really depends on clientele.  Went to a few younger demo, hip spots and it was seamless.  Went to a few places in the burbs that had it, and heard multiple tables still asking for paper.

I will say, I’d like to see QR code menus stay WITH restaurants willingly supplying WiFi credentials.   They go hand in hand for me.  Funny going to many places abroad and it’s pretty standard to have the password on a menu or have it open with just an email needed to log on, where even in places like NYC, it’s a discouraged secret kept under wraps

Did I miss where he claimed to be persecuted?  There is crap flinging from all over the spectrum, in almost every thread, I’m sure he’d gladly admit plenty of it came from people he was more closely aligned with politically on the surface.

I guess he is allowed hyperbole and I am not?  See below.

The Covid Board has been the de facto Political Board almost from its inception.

Ah Lenny, you're getting good at this victim stuff.

This isn’t hyperbolic. It’s making up something that isn’t there.

I mean, I remember very early on discussions about politics being caveated with (paraphrasing) “well there is a political aspect to much of the COVID response, so we will allow it within reason”.  I don’t think he is wrong at all with that statement, it wasn’t even hyperbolic IMO.  While it was often civil and still productive, the COVID board WAS heavily political from the jump.

Got it.  You were just lodging a complaint.  ::)

There was certainly a lot of politicking around covid (not necessarily here), and people brought it up (here). T'was one of the dangers of the board - and we tried to moderate it a bit.  But my point was that there have been political undertones all along.  Now, it's mostly politics.  I don't want to moderate that.

I was at a place once where they wouldn't give me the password. The bartender insisted on typing the password into my phone himself.
Have some patience, FFS.

Show some self-discipline, people. If you think the Covid board should be closed, don’t click on it.

This is hysterical

The 1st sentence was tongue-in-cheek. The 2nd was semi(?)-serious.

But it still amazes me that people are offended. No one forces them to either click or read.

Well, some Scoopers might like to read what a few folks actually have to say about COVID-19. We do have people who have some expertise on medical issues, science, etc. Plus, sometimes even non-experts find interesting articles to post that give genuine insight into what's what. But upon opening the COVID board, what those interested Scoopers mostly find are political arguments. I'm guilty, as are you, as are at least a dozen or two others.

Speaking only for myself, if the mods ruled at midnight tonight that any political comments on the COVID board would result in a week Scoopcation, I'd refrain from making political comments ... or I'd accept the consequences.

Cheers!

Leave it open, but smite the political bickering with the week off button more liberally.
