Photographs in MU basketball history
« on: May 07, 2021, 04:42:36 PM »
What is/are the most iconic photograph(s) in Marquette basketball history. By "iconic" I don't necessarily mean dramatic events, game winning shots, etc. I mean a snapshot of a moment in time when no words are even necessary. When the image speaks for itself. Where everyone nods to themselves and says, yes, this is why Marquette basketball means so much to me.

In no particular order, mine are:

1. March 28, 1977. Last seconds ticking off the clock. Al sitting with his head in his hands crying. It's over.

2. March 1970. Dean Meminger holding the NIT Trophy over his head at Madison Square Garden. Ever present grin.

3. 1974. Al on the scorers table. John Powless walking off. Hank, rolled up program in hand, leading the cheers. The "thrill of victory and the agony of defeat" captured in one shot.

Man it's great being an MU basketball fan.

My recollection of the Pat Smith photo is that it was in response see to a comment by Ray Meyer, the dePaul coach, who said something to the effect that Smith was so blind he couldn't throw a ball into Lake Michigan. So the next day this picture was taken.

As to the famous "The finger" photo, my recollection was that the morning paper (The Milwaukee Sentinel at the time) edited out the famous finger, but the evening paper, the Milwaukee Journal, went ahead and printed the unedited photo.

I recall that Pat got into a skirmish with the DePaul center Bob Zoretich. Both got tossed. Next day in the paper (after a Marquette win) Ray Meyer says, “We lose our #2 scorer and rebounder, Al loses a guy who couldn’t throw it into Lake Michigan if he was standing on the beach.” Al loved the quote and the subsequent picture became part of Marquette lore.

Not iconic but here is a photo I took of our tip off game commemorating 50 years of Marquette basketball back in 1966 at the old arena.

Just a question about the picture of Al getting the finger ... Did you have to be 85 years old to work the scorer's table?

Dick: All of those MU and McGuire photos and more are in my biography of Al, "You Can Call Me Al."

All of those photos are classic, including a shot of Dean and Goose wearing the "bumblebee" uniforms.

It is hard to believe Al is gone 20 years.

Go Warriors!

P.S. I have additional photos of both of my books on my website (www.jdmpress.net).

P.P.S. This summer I will most likely have some other news to report on my biography on Coach Al.

Sorry gang. They're all great but only this one still makes me tear up. That night was something else. We'd fought so hard for so long. These guys had the courage and talent to bring one home for us.

Having watched us get so close in 1969, 1971, 1974 and 1976, it was incredible to see us -- and Al -- get to the promised land. When you think of how many schools play Division 1 basketball and how few actually have won an NCAA, we're in rare company.

We were all so young back then -- and we're not anymore. But that night was the meaning of "We are Marquette!"

Gosh, I hope we do it again!

My favorite pic is the one with Michael Wilson standing on the rim.

After Doc made the game winning shot we all rushed the floor. Michael asked me and another guy to lift him up to the rim so he could climb up there. As we hoisted him I pulled off his shoe to keep as a souvenir. He got up to the rim, looked down at me and said, "Give me my damn shoe". I gave it back to him. Anyway, that is why he is holding his shoe in his hand in that iconic photo.

We all make our contributions - mine was to pull off a shoe.

I don't know if there are pics, but after the USF NIT game and we rushed the floor we were near the scorers table and Will Gates was up there dancing. He asked one of my buddies for the MU flag he had (we borrowed if from a guy on our floor) and we never got it back. It's all good though (and we bought the dude a new flat).

A few weeks prior to the NIT run I had decided to transfer. The cold and darkness of February, the cost, the difficulty of the classes were all wearing on me. That night changed my mind. Little did I know that there was an HS sophomore watching that game with her dad, who would only allow her to go to a Jesuit school if she went out of state. She started looking at MU after that night (despite her priest pushing her to go to Xavier, his alma mater). She and I got married 9 years later.

I remember seeing the guys who took the sticker off the floor as we walked back to campus. There were some others who took the sideline chairs with them too.
