The Big East tournament starts today, with Marquette leading off against Georgetown. Who (or what) are Scoopers rooting for?

Marquette to win the tournament and get the automatic NCAA tourney bid, regardless of how such a result might or might not affect Wojo's future status as MU coach.
Marquette to beat Georgetown and maybe win another game or two but not to win the title. We don't deserve it, and a title could end up getting Wojo a better extension.
Marquette to lose to Georgetown, hopefully preventing anything more than a buyout-reducing extension to Wojo ... and maybe even getting the powers-that-be to think seriously about dumping him.
Marquette to get embarrassed by Georgetown. A 20-point beatdown would further expose Wojo as a clueless loser, and it might even get him fired.
I don't care. I'm so apathetic that it's an injustice to the word "apathy."

I don't understand the argument on not wanting Marquette to win and be successful.  I have my opinions about Wojo(and they aren't great), but I would prefer my alma mater win basketball games regardless of how I feel about the coach.  When the season is over, we can step back and look at the options, but for now just win.

Goose

I want Wojo to have a resume building weekend. This could be a win-win weekend for everyone. Plus, I would like to see the guys end the season with some success and well played games.

JakeBarnes

Marquette for a Uconn-esque run from here to the championship of the NCAAT.

Then we'll be the first team to fire their coach after a Championship year. #historyinthemaking
Assume what I say should be in teal if it doesn't pass the smell test for you.

I voted that I want MU to win the Big East title and then the NCAA Championship. And then to repeat next year and the one after. And for Wojo to eclipse every past MU coach - including Al - by miles.

I mean, there's a chance, right?

I kinda just want it to be over. *ducks*

If this team was at all entertaining, it would be one thing. But they play slow, sloppy, often ugly basketball. I'm really only watching out of a sense of obligation at this point.

I was pretty entertained watching the games against UNC, Creighton, Xavier, Madison and several others. Even a few of the losses were "entertaining," though I hated the result.

Just my opinion. You obviously have the right to refuse to be entertained.

They've had good games, sure. But I don't find the style pleasing on either side of the ball. Different tastes, I guess.

Goose

I have not found much of this season to be entertaining. I do not ever remember the announcing comment on the flow of the game as much as I have this season. The UNC game they beat into the ground in the second half, the second Creighton game and second DePaul games as well. It is not good for business when the announcers say how sloppy/choppy things are going and it was a recurring theme.

I understand what you're saying, Goose.

However, I have watched a pretty good amount of college basketball this season. I can count on one hand the number of games in which one team -- let alone both teams -- has played great basketball for 40 minutes.

For one thing, it's difficult to do. For another, the other team has a well-paid coach and scholarship athletes, too, and they are working their arses off to prevent the opponent from playing error-free basketball.

It's unrealistic to expect Marquette -- or any other team -- to go into the Dean Dome and play light's out basketball for 40 minutes. So I was plenty entertained by the amazing first half we played, followed by our guys' resiliency to beat back every UNC run despite them turning up the pressure and mucking up the game.

As MUfan12 said, we all have different tastes. Personally, I'll be thoroughly entertained by that win over Creighton 100 times out of 100.

Apathetic. I'm going to watch and root for them but I won't get joy for a win or pain from a loss. It is what it is.

I can't cheer for anyone other than us, even when it's in our best interest. Cheering against Marquette just isn't in my DNA.

I don't think that's anyone's expectation. I was thrilled about the Carolina game, and some of the other big wins. My 2 year old was running around the room with me after the tip-in to beat Madison. It was wonderful.

On the whole, though, there are so many of the same problems that it can get hard to watch. They're still a mess in their base defense. The offense is really predictable, and leads to a lot of grinding possessions. KenPom has them at 279 in average possession length. And the turnover issues have been discussed at length here. It's clear how many flaws in the system Markus covered up.

They seem like great kids, and I'll always cheer for Marquette. But on the whole, this style of basketball isn't my cup of tea.

Totally understand. Thanks for the thorough explanation.

This is exactly how I feel.

Who even cares that they're playing at this point?  I'd love to conduct this survey amongst all alumni who are basketball fans rather than the small segment on Scoop.  Most probably don't even know they play today at this point.

The only snowflakes I see are those on this board who are too fragile to face reality of what this program has become.  However, your broader point seems to be that the majority of "fans" still want MU to win it all.  I have no doubt that's the case on Scoop.  However it's highly likely  is there is a larger fan base who is less rabid that's become completely apathetic to the program and doesn't care if they win or lose.  They likely have stopped following the team because the season has been over for months.

So for those that have stopped following would they watch and support the team if by some miracle they won the BET?  The initial question in the thread is absolutely crazy.  As fans you always support your team in good times and bad.   It is not a conflict of interest at all to root for them every game while simultaneously wanting a new direction and coach for next season.

Agreed. Life is not always black & white. Even though I've become apathetic to the team this year (missed the last 5 or six games), I hope the players and coaches win because they seem like good guys. No conflict of interest to recognize Wojo as a classy guy and at the same time see his limitations as a coach.

That was my first thought when I saw the very wordy options!

Can we change "20 point beatdown" to "30 point beatdown"?
