[Cracked Sidewalks] Eastern Illinois Preview
« on: November 01, 2020, 08:28:20 AM »
This game is screaming "It's a trap!" just like Admiral Ackbar in Return of the Jedi. The Panthers have experience, depth, and have proven to be a difficult opponent for Wiscosin's high majors to dispatch in recent years. Here's a look at the most dangerous of Marquette's scheduled guarantee games:

From my November 29, 2017 post ... will this version be any different?

On MU ... “They don’t cover anyone, they think it is a F’ing Disease”

https://www.muscoop.com/index.php?topic=54923.0

The above quote was from EIU’s head coach Jay Spoonhour (Son of the great coach Charlie Spoonhour).

I know this because I sat in row one behind the visitors' bench and EIU does not use stools near the foul line like MU or most other coaches.  They sit on the bench and given my seats, I was literally in the huddle.

The exact quote came mid-way through the second half when EIU was up 7.  Spoonhour had a giant sh!t eating grin on his face and said (paraphrasing but I think I’m close) ...

“They don’t cover anyone, they think it is a f’ing disease like their d!cks will fall off if they actually cover anyone.”  He then went on tell then to pound the rock into Dama, which they did and it worked.

(How’s that for the opposite of a Wojo huddle!)

Question, was Spoonhour wrong?  From what I saw that was a totally accurate statement.

The larger question, we know this team can score, when should we start to worry about their inability to play defense?

Have you been paying attention to college basketball lately? Experienced mid majors can give any major team a game. Including blue bloods.

And really you need a gig that is more than whining.

Day 2 bump.
Seems like a decent buy game given EIUs T-Rank of 159.

Both of our first two opponents have more Wisconsin kids on scholarship than we do.

Game Day bump! This is another game Marquette should win, but it will likely be less comfortable than the UAPB game was. It's our toughest opponent outside a major conference this year.

10 pt loss to Bucky?   Not a bunch of stiffs.  Just hope the game is played.

They aren't a bunch of stiffs....but Bucky was winning by 19 with 2 minutes and 34 seconds left. Bucky put in their scrubs and Eastern hit a bunch of threes in the last few minutes to cut the lead to 10.

I do know, Newsie is right on you knowing ball.

I suspect that's why we didn't see a walk on parade against UAPB. For as poor as this staff seems to do with advanced metrics, they do understand that margins matter to the NET.

Either that or they realize with a young team, two weeks off of practice, and only two buy games before things get serious, that giving the scholarship players all they run they can get is for the best.

Brew—you’ve mentioned this in the past. Why do you think this is?
Why wouldn’t a high major college coaching staff use advanced metrics to better understand their team and productivity in certain situations?
Do they not believe in it?
Do they believe they have been around the game long enough and don’t need to be told anything about the game they know do well?
Seems odd to me.

And they were up 23 at the half.

I think that while Wojo is young, growing at the feet of K has made him more old-school in his basketball philosophies. I think it's why we've seen such a push to man even when the personnel may not have fit it as well, why minute allocations favor players that stay home on defense instead of pursuing steals, and why he sticks with players sometimes long after others are passing them in the efficiency pecking order.
