Doc Emrick retiring.  Too bad because has been the voice of hockey the last 20+ years.

I didn't realize he is 74 and has a PhD, so he's an actual doctor.

Hence the nickname...respectful student of the game, meticulous preparation, from pronunciation to day of game adjustments, was fair to all teams, always changing and evolving. So, I am not surprised he would know when to retire. One of the best hockey broadcasters since Dan Kelly. Big loss for hockey broadcasting and broadcasting in general.

I grew up listening to Marv Albert doing Rangers hockey on the radio.

During the same time period a young John Sterling -- yes, THAT John Sterling, but nobody had heard of him then -- was the Islanders' radio voice. I hated the Islanders so I hated him. But, in retrospect, he was merely a bad announcer, not hate-able.

When all fanbases can agree that a person is a good announcer, you know you've done pretty damn well for yourself. Can't recall anybody saying they hated Doc Emrick or "Doc Emrick hates *insert your team here*"

CBS had the Winter Olympics the year prior. He even did a few college basketball games too.

He grew up a baseball fan in very small town, rural Indiana, son of a school principal and guidance counselor. Thus school was an emphasis for him at a younger age.

But he was able to go to a Fort Wayne hockey game as a teen, and he loved it. He liked their (63 years) year broadcaster Bob Chase. And his interests switched to hockey. After getting his PHD in Northern Ohio, he started out broadcasting hockey in Michigan. (where he lives)

He bounced around minor league hockey, after a variety if roles in Philly including finally becoming their top pxp voice in his 40's. Then when the KC Scouts/Colorado Rockies moved to New Jersey, he was their first pxp voice for almost 20 years while doing national games on the side, before eventually doing only national games.

I am something of a sports broadcasting conosseuir, separating roles from pxp, analyst etc...and while I try to be generally positive about many just trying to do their best, but there are a few small number, that standout in various sports that I really enjoy. I have been known to watch many games on mute if the broadcast is challenging.

Doc respects the sport, respect each individual player, coach, staff, top to bottom, etc...and treats each game as a joy to be there,

Not bad for a guy that can't skate, doesn't have the deep booming pxp voice, who some said talked too much earlier in his career.

Sadly, Travis Roy passed away today 25 years after his injury. The passion he inspired in others was, and is, something.
