What is Hoop Dreams?

Have to answer in the form of a question.

Alex, I'm pretty sure Hoop Dreams premiered in 1994.

I thought I remembered Gene Siskel saying it should have won the 1994 Oscar - not just for best doc but for best pic. I just ran the googles, and it looks like it was released in October that year.

It is my No. 1 sports film of all-time, just ahead of Raging Bull.

Yes. 1994. When I went home for the semester break freshman year in 1994 so many people were asking me “do you know the guy from Hoop Dreams?”

I remember meeting William at a party at MU. He could not have been more cool and pleasant.  Very honored to be a fellow MU alum of that guy.

I watched it last night.  Those nerds didn't get any of the sports questions right, and some of them were pretty basic.

The teachers tournament is usually pretty brutal.  They had a dude a couple years back who ended up winning the tournament of champions, but that is the exception.

You can barely type a complete sentence, let alone form a complete rational thought.  So I'd be careful with the insults.

Your English and logic teachers clearly failed you.

I remember Tom Brokaw, acting incredulous when announcing on Nightly News that it didn't get nominated for Best Documentary at the Oscars that year.

As I said, Siskel thought it should have won Best Picture, not just doc.

https://www.chicagotribune.com/news/ct-xpm-1994-12-25-9412250050-story.html

A pretty strong year for movies, too: Forrest Gump (the winner), Pulp Fiction, Shawshank Redemption, Quiz Show, Speed, Ed Wood.

I love Shawshank - I almost always stop to watch 5-10 minutes if I'm surfing and see it's on - and also really liked all the others I listed.

But Hoop Dreams really was a special film. It obviously should have won Best Doc, and should have at least been nominated for Best Pic.

I liked how Arthur Agee, Jr respected Chicago basketball history and had the word Tuss on his shoes.

One guy who definitely did not agree with all of our praise for Hoop Dreams was Gene Pingatore.

He came out looking like an absolute d-bag, pretending to care about the kids but actually only caring about what they could do for him.
