These are my guys. I love these guys. In fact, if my sons grow up to be like any of these guys I’d be incredibly proud. Most of you don’t know each one of these guys‘ journeys, stories or personal experiences but I am blessed to have them in my life. They are all unique and different but special nonetheless. Looking at this picture, one thing that should be obvious to everyone is the majority of these guys are black. With the events of the past week, I believe everyone in and around our program is angry, disgusted and fed up.
My heart hurts for my black friends, players, staff members and their families. As we have talked about the issues they face and feel daily I can’t imagine what’s it like to wonder and worry if I should wear a hoodie or not, whether it’s safe for my son to go for a run, or facing looks of suspicion when I am just carrying on my business. My heart also hurts for white Americans too that don’t get it and don’t want to get it. This affects all of us. Our fates are intertwined!! I tell my guys, when used correctly a basketball has “magic” in it. The most magical thing it does is its ability to connect people from all walks of life, all races and all nationalities. In the coming days, our basketball team and our community will need it more than ever. #blacklivesmatter

Some here (myself included) believed that when we were bringing in players from more disadvantaged backgrounds (which included JUCOS and post high school prep schools) that was a good thing which aligned with Marquette’s mission. Others felt that those kind of student athletes devalued their Marquette diploma. The board and Lovell seemed to agree with that. Moving up in the US News rankings seemed to some to be more important. I support the protesters and would participate in the cause they are advocating.  Destroying property, bashing old ladies is nothing but opportunism to sow chaos and division.  Social media makes that easier than ever.  This will be the new normal for decades to come, especially if the leaders reward this kind of behavior.  If destroying people and property = you get your way, then that becomes the default behavior.

Popovich's statement is the single best thing I've read on this subject since George Floyd was murdered in cold blood. He has the credibility, the background and the intelligence to really nail it here.

America is f*cked.  The American dream, has turned into the American nightmare.  The actions of rogue police officers get extrapolated to an entire race and profession, and in turn results in looting, rioting, anarchy, shrouded among sincere protestors - who have a right to be angry.  EVERYONE agreed that what happened to Floyd was reprehensible and disgusting.  Yet to suggest cops indiscriminately go around shooting/killing Black people is an exaggeration just as it is to suggest that Black Lives Matter don't matter. 

The best solution at this stage is to make our police forces 100% Black. 

Beyond that, America has extreme problems in its inner cities, and nothing will change or get better until children aren't brought into this world by people who have zero business having children.  Kids growing up in the inner cities have the odds stacked against them 10, 20, 30x those who are born into a household with two parents, or to those born by single Mom's with an education and occupation to provide for their kids both economically and from a time perspective. Neglected children regardless of color have a much higher propensity for criminality.  Kids growing up in the inner city (or trailer parks) have every right to be angry. Who wouldn't if you had virtually zero sense of security due to being broke and usually without a father figure, or any adult supervision?
