Will Markus be among the field of 64?
« on: March 19, 2020, 02:02:43 PM »
ESPN is getting set to launch its GOAT tournament, and will announce the bracket  tonight at 7pm EST.

Will Markus, a top 20 scorer, make the field of 64? Me, I doubt it, but interesting to consider.

I don't expect any Marquette players to make the list. Maybe Butch Lee, as a NPOY, but I doubt it.

If the season would have played out, he hits 3000 points, wins a National Championship, definitely.  I am the biggest Markus fan there is, but without team success he doesn't  make the list.

We were sub-.500 in the BE, so no - he won't make it.

But Myles Powell played on a winning team, so....

If they're only considering college careers it would be fairly easy to come up with 16 players from the Midwest region and not include a MU player.

If the players are selected regionally we could be up against the Big 10/14, Big 8/12 along with the other Midwest independents.  ie.. Adrian Dantley or Austin Carr and his 40ppg.  I would assume Larry Bird would also represent the Midwest. Oscar?  Or would Cincinnati and Louisville be considered the south?

Since it says best basketball player of all time are they also going to include women?

Agreed. Whenever MU had a high degree of success, we typically had balanced teams that downplayed the need for a single dominant player. Chones had Meminger and Lackey; Bo had Butch, Lloyd and the like; DWade had Diener and Novak.

The only way a MU player gets on the list is if they consider NBA as well, in which case DWade has a good shot.

it will be interesting to see of far they go back and if pro careers are taking into account. From the Big Ten you could have Magic, Cazzie Russell or Rick Mount in addition to Jerry Lucas , Big 8/12 Wayman Tisdale and Danny Manning or do you just stick with Wilt?  Hopefully this isn't like the majority of "greatest" we see frequently these days that don't consider anything that happened before 2005 as actually occurring.

I just read that on their website.    The women could occupy a couple brackets.  There's been plenty of good ones; Miller, Lieberman, Holdsclaw, some UConn names, Lobo, Stewart, Taurasi, Bird, Moore.

I guessed they might include women as espn tends to stretch from what some perceive as typical when compiling their lists.

I looked at their top collegiate football players of all-time that they did last Fall.   Barry Sanders was the most recent player in their top 10.

Wade v. Akeem the Dream. Sorry, Dwyane.

A lot of bias towards the 90’s and 2000’s. Battier? Reddick? Jimmer? No Mount or Isaiah? Lucas as a 15?

Houston went to the National Title game in back to back years. Marquette got destroyed in the National Semi-Final.

If team success is a driving factor in conference and national POY awards (ahem, Myles Powell) then surely it must be factored in to this G.O.A.T. tournament.

Right but Olajuwon wasn't even the definitive top player on those teams (secondhand) from what I understand Drexler was

Does D-Wade deserve to be on this list?
Did he a have a top 50 (as a 10-seed, maybe a top 30 of all males) collegiate basketball career over the past 60 years or so?

I personally don't see much on his collegiate resume warranting his inclusion.
There were plenty of omissions.   Only two from UCLA on the list?    Sidney Wicks had stats similar to DWade.  Plus he was a two time All-American, winning NCAA titles in all three of his years.

Olajuwon's was a NBA stud, but his 7 seed could also be questioned.   A heck of a collegiate defensive player that made the Finals twice and three Final Fours.

If you're talking post college, Wade definitely should be listed.

This is why Butch Lee or Bo Ellis would probably be better candidates.
