Tiebreaker with Butler
« on: March 01, 2020, 01:33:29 PM »
Butler is currently ahead of Marquette in the Big East standings due to the tiebreaker procedure.  Marquette needs to win out and Butler must lose to either St. John's (home) or Xavier (away) for MU to earn the five seed in the Big East tournament.

If MU, Butler, and Xavier end up in a 3 way tie at 9-9, MU wins the mini-conference.

Correct. By virtue of Butlers win over Creighton, they’re going to beat MU in the tiebreaker.

But it’s very likely the difference between a first round matchup with PC or Nova. At this point in the season, not sure it matters much. I’d maybe slightly prefer PC as beating a team three times is very tough, but PC is playing better right now including beating Nova in Philly yesterday.
I would take the Rick SLU program right now.

So once again we need a wing and prayer just to finish 5th in Beast. Just what we get for 2 million dollars plus for the coach.
I thought you were dead. Willie lives rent free in Reekers mind.

No. We finish 5th if we win the next two. No wing or prayer needed.

If both Marquette and Butler win the next two games, Butler will be the five seed based on the tiebreaker.  Here's the breakdown:

Marquette 10-8
Butler 10-8

Seton Hall - both teams are 0-2 vs. Seton Hall
Creighton - Marquette is 0-2 vs. Creighton and Butler is 1-1 vs. Creighton
Villanova - Both teams split with Nova
Providence - Marquette is 0-2 vs. Providence and Butler split with Providence

We will not win a head to head tiebreaker with Butler because the Bulldogs have a better record vs. the teams ahead of MU in the standings.

If MU, Butler, and Xavier end up in a 3 way tie at 9-9, MU wins the mini-conference.

Only if Butler loses to Xavier... MU has the head to head against X; Butler has the tiebreaker against MU; however, MU is 3-1 in the mini-con, X is 0-3, and Butler is 2-1.  So if all three end up 9-9, MU can still win the mini-con outright.

So.... in order to get the 5th seed, there are two possible scenarios:
1) MU wins out AND Butler goes 1-1.
2) MU, Butler and X all go 1-1 AND X beats Butler.

Wow, I'm very concerned for Benny.  Being able to mimic Myron Medcalf's writing so closely implies an oncoming case of dementia.
